hydro of luxfer 4350 psi 106cf
got a luxfer 4350 psi 106cf aluminum with fiber wrap tank and i had it hydroed which it passed with flying colors….but the place that did it also hammer stamped the neck with date and such….just like you do on a steel tank….
i havent had time to call luxfer and ask if stamping the tank like that is ok….i remember something from a while back that they should not be stamped but rather have a sticker epoxied to the side
does anyone know about this or have a link , cause if they fucked up my tank im am going to be pissed !

I believe dive shops require yearly visual inspection and tank hydro is as per dot regulation every 3 or 5 yr depending upon specific tank classification. Usually CF and certain earlier dated aluminum is I believe 3 yrs? Steel and later classified aluminum 5yrs? Also carbon fiber and certain aluminum is 15 yr service life unless prior to 1987 recieved specific dot manufacturers exemption? Steel and most late manufactured tanks ok as long as continued to pass 5 yr hydro?
Anyways there does indeed involve a yearly thorough visual inspection from you filling station , thats when they issue the visual inspection sticker with the month and year punched out. The sticker usually has there retail store logo to advertise.
Regardless all vessels recieve a once over visual prior to attachment of fill whip.

I didn’t even think about asking what the dive shop was going to do when I had my new luxfer tank inspected and filled, I guess since it’s a scuba tank they were familiar with it and epoxied a sticker on it.
They were saying I needed it inspected yearly not sure why since the luxfer can go three years before being inspected, maybe it’s a diving regulation. I have a paintball adapter coming so I should be able to swing the three year inspection by not using the dive shop for filling now.

Well thats kinda bummer. I take it that this is the first time it has came up for hydro? So assume that its fives years old. Does this wrapped alum. have similiar 15 year service lifespan like carbon fiber? In other words you have ten more years of having to live with a stamp on your bottle? Man thats a nice looking bottle too! No recourse through the hydro tester …. I guess ya could sell it,,,, nice selling point is that it was recently hydro’d .
I will tell ya what…. To help ya out I will put my well being and safety on the line and give ya 100 bucks for that bottle,,,,, :rofl:
Sorry to joke but couldnt resist…… Sure does look like a nices setup…. man I wouldnt know how to take the luxfer reps statement. I guess its one of those things you end up having to just live with…. maybe you could at least go back to the hydro place and constructively bitch nicely like,,, and maybe at least get a refund for the hydro cost or something plus maybe make em a bit more aware…. Good customer service would at least warrant that they hear out your dissatisfaction. If yy can document the personal opinion of the professional luxfer rep. It helps lend some credeance to your displeasure.
I too would be pissedif someone were to stamp my tank. It’s my tank. I even go so far as not to do the propane tank swap thing. I like being able to say something is mine.

so i talked to luxfer who gave me a link to the spec sheet, and it does permit stamp, but an epoxied sticker is also ok…mine got both gdamn it
the guy at luxfer told me that he would never have his own tank stamped, and would have insisted on the epoxied sticker…i wish i would have known…but now you guys know
agree with knife here. id be pissed to be honest. ive seen lpg tanks, though a lower pressure fail and its not pretty. ive also seen nitrogen tanks fail at the neck and if they go all at once they can become a rocket.
the proper procedure for marking a hydro is either epoxy a tag on the tank itself OR a piece of paper gets elmers glue sticked to the tank THEN wrapped with packing tape a few times to create a water tight seal, PLUS that little slip is usually laminated. thats how all of my paintball tanks were marked after hydro. some were taped others wete laminated and epoxied slips near the bottom of the tank not near the neck
Ahh! Got ya! didn’t’ know there was alu. exposed. So I would think it would be fine.
You know, the hydro is required, but it does put undue stress on the bottle. No to mention the stamping.
Alway wondered why they use stamps in the first place. Especially on new bottles.
Guess they never heard of notch sensitivity. It gives a very good place for a failure to start!
This is the very reason a LOT of Custom KnifeMakers no longer stamp their work. We now use electro etch machines. A lot less likely to cause a problem.

well yes and no….its an aluminum cylinder like a regular scuba bottle, with the addition of fiber wrap, there is metal exposed on this tank
most carbon fiber cylinders (see below) are a aluminum bladder with carbon wound around them, with no or little metal exposed….stamping one of these tanks would break a serious amount of fibers rendering it unusable

Yep, that is how a CF bottle is made! And you DON’T Stamp them. Period!!!.

I have only had them with a sticker when hydro for a CF tank.
Never saw one with a stamp on the neck
