I hacked my Mutant Shorty shroud!
First, I read Uncle Hoot’s :hoot: post on drilling venting ports at the base of the shroud. Then I looked for my tools. I gathered my 1.5mm drill bit, a dremel, some paper and Scotch tape.
I measured on the paper to put dots every 0.95″ or so, this will place four holes on the shroud at about equal distance. I also measured where to drill. From the base of the shroud (receiver end), 0.6″ to 1.5″ seems to be clear of anything and is suitable for venting ports.
Taped the paper on the shroud, and used the Dremel to drill the four holes. I find a Dremel a better tool than a drill because of the higher speed (I used the lowest setting on mine) and better control. Yes, if you have a drill press, use that!
After drilling, I took the tape/paper off, and the holes were actually very clean. Used a black Sharpie to repaint the exposed aluminum so the venting ports are slightly more concealed.
Without any additional LDC, the muzzle report was reduced compared to before. No quantification at this point, I’ll do that some time later this week. There was definitely a puff from the venting ports when the gun discharged, but not much sound to accompany the puff of air.
With an additional Clague 8″Lx2″D LDC (yes, that’s BIG CAN on a little gun!), muzzle report is, well, gone. From the muzzle end dry firing, there was a puff of air as expected, but just a faint click of the hammer strike. Now, from the shooter’s perspective, there was actually still a bit of sound. Not muzzle report, but just the hammer striking and possibly air tube ping. In other words, I think this is as quiet as it can get!
