I hate to ask this, but what the hell is a TopHat?

I’m reading about this a and can’t see what the hell it is? 🙁

The silver little hat looking thing in Adams picture is the tophat. It’s what the hammer strikes when fired, presses the tophat backwards for a blast of air firing the pellet.
