yeah i got some cheapy calipers, im not sure i trust them within a few thou though. it is a pretty rad course, the instructor is in his second year, him and second year guys say it was a mess before, old guy didnt like new tech so much. but they are emphasizing tech now, im just physched. glad to be around some pro machinists here. now i only need to work on getting my own machines……

ive had 6 cheap sets of digital vernier calipers for ever, an use them all the time . $13 . im amazed how well they work , keep one on ever machine . i have 3 sets of dial ones , i dont use .
i did manual machining for years .mill an lathe . i tought myself cnc an actully found learning to run a cnc mill helped with manual milling . setting all work up in quadrants makes much more sense now , an easy to remember .

sounds like your going to a good school , the school around here teaches a 2 year course an you never do any cnc maching , an you only learn 2d cad an some machine code … kind of a bad joke on the students with the availability of cheaper cnc machines an the need for cnc machinists. but manual machines will always be needed .

Gee I think I know what you mean I am retired from my job of being a machinist for 38 years so I can relate 😯 As far as mics and calipers there are a ton out there! Caliper get a digital one! On the mic if you can check them out some are easier to read than others mitutoya set one inch, two inch, and three inch, they were not digital but had the numbers that rolled by, it made it handy to be able to see the numbers there and gave you a quicker reference, but you still had to read off the thimble to get fits that were precise! like a bearing fit where you look for size on size or a half thousands or less! Enjoy what you are doing it is a real rewarding job, And a bit of advice get into the cnc and learn it all, it is an Education for yourself that will pay off if you ever get into it for yourself! I have two freinds that do cnc work they bought a Hass mill and lathe three years ago and both are paid for and they have more shop jobs coming inthan they can handle! they hired a couple more guys on!!
