Q:

I’m on the Edgun R3M list for a .25 – a mistake?

You Edgun experts that really know the score about the gun, should I have sucked it up and waited for a .22?

I for one think it’s a mistake. I am a big pest hunter (nearly every day) and am inundated with sparrows around my house among many other vermin. My .22 Cricket with a JSB 18 cleanly puffs them at roughly 33 FPE in a nice bouquet of feathers but the Matador with a Predator 26 at about 50 FPE sticks what is left to the side of the feeders. It is a real problem to clean them off.

If your a seasoned prairie dog (sod poodles) shooter like I am you just can’t top a Matador with .25 Predators for pesting around the house. Yip Yip 🙂 We shall see what the 30 cals have to offer soon.

It was indeed Europe,Sweden and ME !! Now it´s a property of Dr. Evil though.

I must have read it wrong.. I was sure I read somewhere here that they had got a replacement .22 multishot kit for their R3.. maybe that was Europe? Tony will be right for sure..

Hey Donny. I jumped over to that thread, just to see if it was the one I’m familiar with – it was. I noticed a post by our esteemed member HOOT. He explains his thinking about the difference in calibers. Hoot, I hope you don’t mind my reposing your thoughts here. I just found them to be enlightening and very interesting.

From Hoot:

“I think the key to caliber is twofold: Intended use, and personal accuracy potential.

The hunters and pesters would benefit from the .25 as to range and fpe of energy delivered to the game.

As for accuracy difference, let’s assume Ed is pretty good at his accuracy. For most normal shooters, either caliber will outshoot all but the very best
of us. In both the Cricket and the Edgun. The two guns are so inherently accurate, that it would require a professional marksman to see any appreciable
difference.

If you are a competition shooter, then caliber selection might be a factor, given the distance of the target. But then, a lot of the competition shooters
are using .117 caliber.

I’ve had both calibers, and both Cricket and Edgun. I can’t see any measurable difference between the two calibers. So Ed can hit a two inch bullseye, dead center, at
under 70 meters more times with a .22 than a .25, and I can only hit the black at that range. Is that partial inch difference going to mean much to me? Considering
that I can take that target and hold it over my eye cavity, and consider that I can drop any pest with an eyeball shot, given the benefit of a solid rest, no wind,
and good light?

It’s all in perspective. Either caliber is more accurate than 95% of us can shoot under the best of conditions, at any range. So, when picking a caliber, don”t major in minors! Pick the caliber that suits what you shoot…be it paper or flesh. Personally, I prefer the .25 because it packs a punch, and I don’t always shoot paper targets.

Just a few thoughts.”

.25 Cal is what I’ve heard too Tom: http://www.talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=27086

Gotta say – I sure hope you’re wrong. Word on the street, here in the US, is that the next shipment of R2Ms will be .25s and arrive in October. Supposedly, the .22s won’t be available until next year

Damn – nice shooting!! Now I’m stoked – impressive.

Just a quick example of 25 capability in mild wind(lightest I normally see).
Quick run of shots off bipod hunting style. I’ve shot tighter groups in similar situations but this is what I consider acceptable hunting condition accuracy ie; Wind, heart pumping, off bipod, acquire target quickly and fire.

I really do hope Ed comes out with the .22 multishot kit soon..I don’t see why we would need to wait?….if he’s making .22 R3m’s wouldn’t people with a regular .22 matador just need the new breech?….

Both my Eds are set at 885 fps. The jsb 18grn 22 is an excellent pellet for plinking and small game out to 60s and small/med birds out to low 100s. The 25 at same fps is a whole other animal. Example-damage to rabbit with 22@50yds is similar to 25@100-110yds. Just as accurate and better wind buck at longer ranges]. Best part is while the 22 seems to get best stability in my Ed at around 885fps the 25 in the high 900s could still put up similar groups at 100yds. Great for hunting but significantly louder and reduced shot count. So I backed it down, however I may crank it back up to around 950.
My 22 gets appx 115 regulated shots and the 25 gets appx 75.
I find I use the 22 for lots of plinking and pests right around house but for hunting the 25 gets the go every time.
I don’t think you can go wrong with 25. Best thing is you can easily sell for what you paid unlike cricket which seem to lose $2-300 on resale as they have flooded market and easier to obtain.

Thanks Demp, great info and insight. I have always used JSB 18.1s. Never has a gun that didn’t like them. As for the .25cal, I intend to start with JSB 25.4s. You’ve touched on points that are important to me. Your point about better wind penetration is great because here there is almost always an ocean breeze here and the .22s show themselves to be wind sensitive.

Your experience with FPS is very interesting. I very much like the idea of around 930 FPS. When I’m after Squirrels, avg distance is 65-70 yds (they’ve become educated). Distance for crows is even higher – maybe ~80 yds. The best gun I have at distance is my HW100. I’d be glad to be able to say that about an Edgun .25 at 80 to 100 yds.

As per my signature I have one of each. Both shrouds are modded and the 22 is very backyard friendly now. Pellet impact is still loudest thing even into rubber mulch target.
I also stock appx 30k pellets as norm for each caliber. The 22 is better priced obviously but wait for the 10% off plus free shipping deals to maximize savings on 10k+ pellet orders.

Hi Tom! I am on the .25 R3M list as well. I don’t think you could go wrong with it. Looks like you have a bunch of guns already in .22. I am guessing the .22 Matadors won’t be ready until mid next year. Have fun with the .25 and if you don’t like it, wait for the .22 to come out and sell the .25. I am sure you won’t have any problems unloading it for what you paid for or more.

Yeah, I was kinda of thinking along the same lines. Prices on used Edguns seem to stay fairly healthy.

Once you have tested the .25, you will have your answer.

Does the term: “pingg-WAAACK!!!” mean anything to you? It soon will. Then you will understand.

I’m likin’ the WAAACK a lot. Got a possum (you must be familiar with those in Toad Suck) tonight. I was using sticks. Had a HW100 in one hand and a flashlight in the other . Made a bad decision and took the shot. The sucker rolled over and remained still for 5 or 6 seconds, then he stood up and started stumbling away – well I ran up to him and put another shot in his noggin. That finished the job. A .25 would have, most likely, taken care of him on the first shot

I little off topic but how in accruact does the cricket compare to the airwolf you have…

I’ve two Airwolfs. One is a smidge more accurate than my Cricket – the other is a little less accurate than the Cricket and has more flyers. My Cricket is a helluvan accurate gun. I should say that, with an airgun that’s up to it, I can consistantly shoot 1/2-inch groups at 50 yards. That’s the limit of my ability – 3/8-inch groups happen every once and a while, but it has to be a wind still day and my fingers have to be crossed.

You have all noticed that all my current guns are .22 cal. I have close to 30,000 pellets piled up. The prices of .25s shocked me a little – $17.00 for a 350 count tin, hmmmm…

It does mean something to me, it’s my Momma’s name! how dare you Hoot

UGMJ – I was thinking the same after I posted the response. Since all of his other guns are .22, he could share the ammo. With .25 he’ll have to buy a different batch. I’ve seen SniperQTY youtube videos of him hunting long range with .177 compact cricket. Very impressive!
