I Need A Scope For My New Talon Stubby??
I am in need of a scope for my new Talon Stubby. I currently have 2 Hawke Sidewinder Tacticals 1/2 mil dot 6.5-20x on my Condor and Marauder and they are in my opinion the best etched galss reticles out for the money and perfect for airgun trajectories. Those guns are big pigs and the scope is 27 ozs so I am looking for something a little smaller and lighter but with high magnification since this is really a 27″ carbine and not a pistol. A compact 30mm with high mag and a large objective with side focus would be perfect. Budget under maybe $400.
Any thoughts?

Actually I took off a Hawke Varmint SF 6-24 which is light and just put one of my Hawke Sidewinder Tacticals 6.5-20 on because the etched glass 1/2 mil dot 20x reticle is simply a work of art. I have two of them (one on the Condor). The Marauder ended up with the Varmint SF.
try out the leapers bug buster scope. i dont know about the price but they’re a good value and fall right were you need it to- a small, compact scope with good optics
The one you see in the picture is the 4 baffle and that is best if you live in a subdivision. The noise level is the same as my Condor with the 4 baffle shroud. It is slightly more noise than my Marauder 25 but not by much and very acceptable.
It is really loud without it so I consider it a necessity in a subdivision. The design of the baffles in this shroud are really interesting. I don’t think they would work on a firearm because there is no place for the gas to get into the shroud if that makes sense yet it is extremely effective for these airguns. What I was told indirectly from the engineer who designed these for R&L Airgun Supply is that they reduce the resonance of the air. They purposely didn’t want it to be able to silence a firearm. I think it is ingenious. I know the Marauder baffles are more like firearm baffles.
Did you get the three or four baffle modifier?
Can you generally describe how effective it is?

BTW – I put one of my Hawke Sidewinder Tacticals (6.5-20) on the Stubby Extreme despite a little more weight. It is worth it.

The shroud adds 3-3/4″ inches to the length, is very light, and uses 3 specially designed baffles. It is supposed to be pretty effective but I don’t have one and have not tested it.
BTW with the 25 cal barrel and the extreme valve and Eun Jin pellets the fpe was tested at 57. Even the 22 barrel with the 32.4 Eun Jins did 51 fpe. I mainly shoot Cudas/Kodiaks so the 22 maxes out about 45 fpe.
I will be doing some extensive Stubby accuracy testing using a locked rest with different pellets. As I already found out, Cudas/Kodiaks are fabulous.
I’m not trying to put the gun down, I am a big fan of the AF line in any configuration. In fact they are my favorite guns. I am just trying to learn all the facts and for the sake of objectivity I would not want any aspect of any air rifle misrepresented or misinterpreted.
Availability is a plus no doubt, and the price point is supreme! I’m not quite sure I follow on the sound issue. I’m sure the Edgun is front heavy (correct me if I’m wrong) due to the effective barrel shroud. The short “special” internal shroud you mentioned must be amazing as “short” usally does not coincide with effectiveness.
W/0 a shroud a 40fpe plus air rifle might as well be a BMG going off in your yard.
Again, I’m not knocking the “stubby”. I am interested in seeing more 😉
Well the Edgun (Bulldog) is twice the price and unavailable so it is hardly a fair comparison. I have already been in contact with a guy with an Edgun and stacked them up. Shot count and power depends on the valve you pick since the Stubby is available with 3 valves and 2 calibers (22 and 25). (more flexible than any Edgun by a long shot – not even close). With the tank having twice the capacity it kicks butt witht the std valve but has less power. With the Hiflo it is comparative on both. With the extreme valve it has considerably more power than any Edgun ever dreamed of (and the power is adjustable like the Edgun of course). Accuracy wise I already shot a 1/4″ 3 shot group at 40 yards with H&N Match 5.51 pellets (22) locked in a gun vise so it is very competitive there. The Edgun is more nose heavy than the Stubby so it has it beat on balance and comfort. Weight is comparative albeit the Stubby is slightly heavier with the larger tank capacity. Length is nearly identical. The stock is maple instead of beech and covered with 3 coats of a bed liner type coating sanded inbetween coats. Metal is anodized and blued like the Edgun. A very short special shroud has been created to sound deaden it comparable to the Edgun but I am shooting it my neighborhhod backyard w/o one and it is much quieter than I would have thought. A threaded bushing goes on the barrel behind the end cap for the shroud. Basically it kicks Edgun’s fanny at half the price. Oh and it is available and locally supported. Nice try.
One problem with the Edgun is the breech is right below your eyeball on the scope and I was told when the oring goes one can get a pretty good blast of air right under the glasses. No thanks.
There have been lots of comparisons between the stubby and the Edgun, and although I don’t own either one…I must admit that they do have a similar appearance…but I think it won’t come close to the EG on shotcount, ES, and sound. I bet that stubby sounds dam near as loud as my AAA .25. To quiet it down won’t make it a stubby anymore. Good looking gun, however!
I have a cheap Tasco 6-24x44mm target dot varmint I keep if one of my good scopes breaks on a trip that I put on it set at 14x and I like the high magnification but the reticle isn’t appropiate. The Stubby is capable of Condor range. The Hawke etched glass 1/2 mil dot 20x reticle is the best out for the buck for these airguns. It rivals ny 8-32x NSX Nightforce on reticle quality and the range of mil dots is perfect for PCPs. I may go Hawke Varmint side focus which has the same reticle but only wire. They are cosiderably lighter and about half the price. Not quite a Hawke Sidewinder Tactical but good for the price. I wish they had the 20x reticle like the Hawke STs. Currently they are all 10x 1/2 mil dots.

I have this one on my SS and it is light..but it is only 9x. Mil dot reticle, so far it tracks very well…anything under 17 yards can’t be viewed on 9x without being slightly out of focus. Not a bad scope for the money, but again, not good for tight groups more for hunting…

Sounds like your doing it right, these cheap scopes never take the full potential out of a gun.
Maybe one of the 1×5 or so tactical scopes, Burris and Millet make such animals. A Leupold although much more expensive would be nice also, like a 1×5 variX3, with parallax set closer in.
Maybe one that comes with ear plugs 😆 .

Disregard this recommendation as it is a good scope for longer distance (50 to 100 yards) perhaps for an AR, but I did a test on my ss and I noticed it did suffer from terrible parallex at 25 yards which basically made my regular 1/4″ groups go to 1/2″….
