I think this is a dumb question, but they say the only…

…dumb question is the one not asked. So I will ask if it is necessary to store a night vision in a “faraday cage” in the event of an EMP? And while were at it, what other items would need be stored in the FC. I’m thinking L.E.D. lights, short wave radios, walkie talkies….What about batteries??? Thanks guys.

A worrying thought:
Only citizens of a huge country, like the USA, can have the luxury of planning for such an eventualiity. As any future attack or exchange involving nuclear arms will mean that in the large land masses there will be survivors. Allies, such as the UK, will also be targetted, and just one MIRV will destroy all life here.
So, Yanks, please don’t start anything, as I can’t dig a hole deep enough to live in until the radiation reduces to acceptable levels.

If you’re grounding, then use minimum 6 foot/1.83 meters ground rod.

2 feet of damp earth is the only sure way? So 3 feet wont work?

Store it in a grounded metal cabinet (faraday cage) and you should be all set.

I was mostly referring to an EMP, but my family is “insured” against a nuke already, providing we are not victims of light flash or blast winds….

I’m going to make a small faraday cage out of some deep dish aluminum pans…then I am going to wrap each of the items I wish to protect: short wave radio, flash lights, NV, range finders, etc into individual bags wrapped in foil. Hopefully it will be a minor provision that, if succesful, will be well worth it just in case. Thanks.

You can wrap you NV scope or small electronics in Aluminum foil or drop them into Anti-static ESD plastic bags for short term protection.

A grounding wrist strap or ankle strap (electro static discharge device) should be worn when changing batteries-sim cards-any memory device-usb flash drive. Yeah I don’t either, but you’re taking a chance corrupting the data or photos just like me.

I started wondering with my fairly expensive NV scope and a few other gadgets…it would be silly not to have them stored in a FC. Could you imagine having all kinds of cool stuff only to find out it is worthless when needed 😡

EMP is no problem unless you’re exposed to a nuclear blast, in which all electronics-computers radios and lcd panels and electronic vehicle ignition system, including NV scopes will be destroyed.

The EMP would have to generate enough current to destroy a battery, not likely to do anything to a battery.

Micro circuits, micro processors, transistors/FETS, diodes and rectifiers connected to the power grid or and antenna or exposed wires/cables connecting multiple components ie tv vcr cd dvd player-computer to monitor will all fry.

All electronics sealed and isolated inside a faraday cage will be safe! NOT safe if connected to the internet an antenna or ac power source outside the cage.

My understanding is that any piece of conductive metal (wire) will suddenly have a potential from one end to the other. Any device that relies on that wire will be useless. I would lump batteries into that category.
