Q:

Ice pellets

I was curious if anyone has taken the time to make ice pellets and shoot them. The gun would probably have to be set at a low velocity unless you wanted a puff of ice to come shooting out your barrel, but this seems like a GREAT way to take care of pesky neighbor pets. If the pellet did penetrate, it would soon melt and the owners wouldn’t know anything. The gun would have to be chilled for this to work well and I’m not sure I’d recommend it in one of the higher priced guns.

Seriously though, has anyone tried this?

I don’t believe in this idea, however…don’t use man made fiberglass fibers, try cat hair/dog hair. I would rather them find animal hair. Again, I don’t think this is practical. Just my .02.

That wouldn’t stop the Humane Society from finding the pellet unless it passed through what you were shooting.

I like the idea of an “ice pellet” even if it had something in it to increase strength – like some kind of reinforcement. Fiberglass fibers or something?

that may hold the ice together and allow it to be fired at 900 FPS? All the humane society people would find would be strands of fiberglass in the wound….

How about like on Shooter when they wrapped the bullet in paper?

I always wonder how real that is, I need to read up on it myself.

There isn’t exactly a lot of room between a bullet and the barrel. If you did get paper in there, between the heat of the powder behind it and the heat from the friction of the bullet moving through the barrel at several thousand fps, I would think it would just disintegrate and not do anything for you. And if the bullet was smaller so it didn’t hold against the barrel so tight, there goes accuracy. I just don’t see how it could be effectively done. 😕

But to pretend like I’m contributing to the topic. Something around the side and/or the back would probably keep it intact. But unless that was also something inconspicuous, that would probably ruin the point of the ice pellet.

Gentlemen, its called paperpatching, a smaller cast boolet is made then wraped in a 30lb paper cut to a specific shape. Look at Layman mfg, they offer a complet book on how to do this, Its also very accurate.Started out in the late 1800’s.

Ha Pab, I love it! I do have a blowgun that I have killed a few birds with, but these pesky neighbor pets of mine aren’t necessarily the problem. They’re obnoxious yes, but they just aren’t trained. The owners are the problem…pretty much the dictionary definition of “white trash”.

Myth Busters made ice bullets and shot them out of a .30 caliber gun with gun powder. I believe it was capable of killing someone but the ice did break apart in flight. I would imagine that a large bore airgun shooting an ice bullet at slower speeds could hit something. Any big bore volunteers want to test this out?

How about a wad of something soft behind the ice to cushion the acceleration? Or a very long spear . You can stab it from your porch…. 😆

Well that stinks…..not that I’d ever do something like that anyway 😈

That’s a good idea beany. Would Dry Ice hold together any better when hit with a 2000 PSI blast of air? is it any harder to fracture than regular ice?
Maybe someone with a sorce of dry ice could do a hammer strike to Dry Ice and regular.
I remember one TAG member said he works in a meat cooler. Maybe he would know.

How about dry ice?

In Oregon, it is a 30 minute deal for a rilfe shotgun or handgun, airguns are a buy and walk out, the others you have your prints taken and a background check.

Going to or from a range or hunting you can carry concealed, any other time you go concealed you need a ccw license, that is $50.00 for 3 years, it is a shall issue and you take a 3 night class.

No you can have a gun in Michigan, it’s just harder to purchase a gun here than in other states. Once you have the gun I don’t believe it’s a problem. All I had to do to get a permit was walk into the Sheriff’s dept, ask for a weapons permit to allow me to purchase a gun, and they run a background check. The gun can’t be shipped directly to me either. I have to have it sent to a local firearms dealer through use of their FFL license. Once it’s there, I can show the dealer my permit, pay their fee (which in this case will be $45) and I walk out with a brand new gun. I could skip the first stages of obtaining a permit to purchase if I had a concealed weapons permit but I don’t, and it really only takes around 10 minutes for the background check anyway.

Feel free to bring the gun to Flint and show your cousin. If you have a shroud or any other forms of a silencer on it and an officer sees it, they might question you and take it but I honestly don’t know. Just use caution.

Yep, it has been discussed and generally poo poohed. I think that even if frozen in a sabot the jolt and squeeze would produce a spray of frost at best.

Are you waiting on a permit to purchase in Michigan?
I was going to take my Condor up to Flint to show my cousin but I heard a permit is required.
