Q:

Ideal fps for Condor/TalonSS

Hi guys,

I finally purchasd a chrono and I’m ready to dial in my rifles. 1st the Condor and then the TalonSS. What’s the ideal pellet velocity for accuracy? I’ve read 950 fps is the magic number, and others say 1050. Any comments would be appreciated.

Condor .22 24″ barrel shooting JSB 15.9 grains.

Talon SS .22 12″ barrel shooting JSB 14.3 grains.

did it open at all? 😕

woundn’t open?

Yes sir! Tried 8 times. Missed fired every time at .075, regardless of the PW settting.

OK,… I dialed the tophat to .077 (.075 would not open the valve), set my power wheel to 1 and I’m getting 950 fps on the Condor. Oh, and it’s never shot better!!! I’m robin hooding pellets 2 out of every 3 times from 20 yds.

Now it time to work on the TalonSS and then my new R3 .25.

Cheers.

wouldnt open??

strange…

Samurai,

If you could keep it supersonic all the way… the target won’t hear it coming ’til it’to late. :banghead:

Use “ChairGun Pro”, free program from http://www.hawkeoptics.com to see how quickly your pellet slows down.

OK,…now I have a starting point.
Thank you all for the great responses.

Just one more follow up question – where’s your the tophat setting?… .070?

I just measured my Condor on the chrono with a power wheel setting at 8 and it read 1290 fps (tophat was a .085). Apparently, that’s considered a little to hot for JSB(s), but it’s such a pity dial it down 350+ fps when I know the rifle is capable of so much more velocity.

Any thoughts?

i have 1- 1290 is too hot for any pellet!

2- try some slugs?

Condor 24″ 22
1000fps
18.1g
2000psi fill
Scope height 3.75″
.110″ tophat with o ring
Power wheel no pre load

Talon SS 12″ 22
700fps
18.1g
2000psi fill
Scope height 3.50″
.106″ top hat without oring
Power wheel 3.12

It don’t matter how fast the pellet goes if you can’t hit what your shooting at.

As I’ve stated in other post, these will be at best only a reference point.

Hope this helps.

I have very little experience with pellets under 18g for .22 Airforce rifles. The next time you buy pellets, try some JSB 18.1’s. I don’t think you’ll be dissapointed.

My AF rifles on HPA like a heavier pellet. (The starlings I shoot hate them, though.) 😯

With that being said, my 12” SS spits 18.1g at 700fps with ½” groups 40 yards (my zero) killing starlings on a daily basis. I’m getting 40+ shots before a refill.

My .22 Condor with a 24” barrel is extremely accurate with the 18.1’s as well. I haven’t shot it in a while and I don’t recall what groups I’m getting at 50 yards (my zero). I did run across a 70 yard 10 shot group target. I’m getting mid 30’s on a shot count before I need a refill. (2000psi)

This was at 1000fps.

I have no problem shooting slower if it improves accuracy. I hope to soon slow it down to 900 and see what it will do, but I’ve so busy working on everybody else’s rifles I haven’t had much time for mine. 🙁

Out of my 25 LBT carbine which has a lead cut in and the choke cut off the barrel so I can shoot cast bullets, when I seat Kings deep with the seater that GTBJ made me, I get consistant 1/2inch groups at 40 yards.

Without that tool GTBJ made I get 1 inch or better, perhaps better is not the best word to use, for there is nothing best about 1 inch at 40 yards.

Now 950 FPS with Kings has been right on the edge of too hot in any other Airforce rifle I have had and also a little too hot for my FX Royale 500, but the little carbine with all the mods does seem to like it at that level.

In 22 with a 24 inch Talon valve and 18 grainers 941FPS was the magic number, with the Condor valve I could go higher, but not match the accuracy.

According to Mac1, 905 is the magical number.

My Condor .22 24″ barrel likes baracuda match 21 g 5.51 mm head size at 940 – 950 fps. I have tried almost every other pellet I could find, with poor results at any speed. Not sure why.
Best of luck

I shoot my Condor 24″ barrel .177 at 990fps and accuracy seems good

For the Talon SS with a stock valve shooting those 14.3 pellets you are probably looking at around 855 fps with that 12″ barrel.

1050 sounds a bit hot…
