Ideal/Lyman molds on Ebay and fixing loose mold handles

Someone is selling a collection of Ideal/Lyman molds that were new old stock and has them on Ebay. They have been stored greased for years. Many are 257 bullet molds,Ideal/Lyman 257 molds in any shape seem to go for $110.00 or more, but a lot of these for sale now are unused.

I don’t know if all of these come from the same source, but ene is Butchers beloved 6 cavity EEG/UUG, many 257 designs in single cavity and a Lee 6 cavity 257 52 grain which would be good for those who have a 257 barrel on a platform that does not make a lot of power.

There are also many 30 caliber designs that would look very interesting if I had a 30.

I am rather mold heavy with having two NOE molds and a HP 257420 mold right now and the 410 Accurate mold, all I need for my needs is another accurate mold in 350 to 375 for the Ranger, but I could also live without it..

I sold three molds last week including that RCBS 257 85 grain Cowboy bullet and will sell some more this week.

The HP 257430 I have is the double HP with the extractor, it makes beautiful bullets quickly, but the weather has been shit and I have no idea how they fly.

I also found a great fix for loose wood to steel handles on bullet molds if anyone is having that problem.

Bowman is pushing 1125 or better, he keeps it at the edge of Subsonnic for his area.

Which gives an indication of his rifles power, my Haley 257 Scandalous is doing the same velocity with a 73 grain bullet.

I have a 36 inch TJ in 1-14 and a 34 inch TJ in 1-10 which will be here today.

That would fall into the “within reason class” I spoke of, at 1-6 twist. He is using the RCBS 120 grain mold and the bullets are dropping at 133 grains.

My 1-10 gets in today and if Doug is too busy, I will file down the end until it gets into the breech and then JBWeld it in and try it.

Just seeing if you guys are awake. 😛 But the barrel does get in today.

Tedd or anybody else interested in the 50 grain Lee 6 cavity mold on Ebay, I don’t need it, but I bought it just now in case any of you need or want it.

I have not paid for it yet, but if you want it let me know in the next day or so and I can see if I can have it sent directly to you. I have I think 93.75 with shipping in it.

The one I had cast good bullets, they were just oversize for what I was looking for at the time. which means dropping at 260 and I was wanting 256 or so. I think with Dougs AF conversions, they would be going right at the edge of SS

I absolutely agree about the overstabilizing,but military and some experienced long range shooters suggest to keep close at 2.0 stability factor because a bullet start to overstabilize at 1.5 which is ideal for medium distances .
I think 1/6 twist for an airgun is an extremely overstabilizing and this effect start happens after 2.5 SG.
My understanding about overstabilization is something like this

…so i ll avoided to make a bullet lands on it’s base while is still at 200yrd’s.

Tof…i believe that the Millers formula usually tell the truth….do you?
I mean…do you use it or other kind of stability calculator before trying to shoot something?

I would be really curious about the loverin designs, they had many tiny bands, and in 257 were from 70 to 100 grains in weight, and for several different calibers.

Problem is with a NOE 100 grain mold and a Hoch nose pour mold that is 109 grains, it is hard to justify.

But then do you need to justify a purchase of a bullet mold?

I have over the last three days of rainy weather that I can’t shoot in, caught up on casting. I have cast perhaps 600 keepers, that pays for a bullet mold right there if I was buying store bought cast bullets.

With a Shoebox and a bullet mold, all things are possible. 😛

That Lee 256 moldis a Ranchdog mold.

I had one in 56 grains when iwas trying to get a mold for the .255, but it cast out at .260, whichis fine for a .258 barrel.

The one on Ebay is a 49 grain bullet, so with lead or 20-1 it will drop at 51 to 53 grains.

If you can’t find it in Ebay, and you want it, let me know and i will bid on it. It expires in 12 hours.

I am not so sure you can over stabilize these air gun bullets, within reason of course, but you can surely under stabilize them.

John Bowman is using a 1-8 twist on his Chasiss rifle in 257. He is shooting a 133 grain bullet, yet it works very well with the lighter slugs like the 257420.

I think the mold Doug is talking about is one of the old Ideal/Lyman molds I wrote about that are on Ebay now, correct me if I am wrong there Doug.

Those molds are no longer being made, right now all Lyman makes are the 257420 molds in 257. That is why those Ideal/Lyman molds sell for so high on Ebay, there are just not that many. RJ’s spitzer mold is another example of a discontinued Ideal/Lyman design.

Well….if i was remember right it must be 84gr but not sure.

Usually,spitzers puts less weight in the front of the bullet and need to pay attention on the barrel twist which must be a size slower instead this one used on a FN bullet with the same weight.

Says it is a spritzer and 80 gr. So maybe 85 gr with pure lead.

Wise decision Doug…How about bullet weights on this mold?..is it lighter than 100gr?

Hey guys…Did ever someone of you ,try to get a bullet mold on his own preference?
I just wondered how a 257388 or 257418 performs with a boat tail base in it’s bottom…except if there is something like this available right now and i didn’t noticed it yet.
