Ideas needed for salvaged lead
I just cleaned out my steel .22 and various duct seal traps (OMG do my finger tips hurt after pinching though all the duct seal in a 20×16 trap with 2 layers of duct seal… 👿 )
I am now the proud owner of about a quart of what used to be pellets.
I might take them to a local gun club where some guys cast there own lead. I’m also willing to send it to anyone here that might want it (you pay shipping) BUT… What I really want to do is make/cast something interesting or unusual out of it. The super size pellet like someone did would be awesome but I’m not sure i could manage a mold that would do it justice.
Give me some other ideas!!

I’m liking the soda can casting….
get yourself a pair of hemo-stats, or needle nose pliers, after you get the hang of it plucking from the duct seal is automatic.
I use the hemos, kinda push in the pellet hole and squeeze.

Did that for a while then realized how much time I was spending. The one trap is big and heavy. Must have deleted the pics off photbucket but 20x16x3 of duct seal with a steel and a plywook backer and framed in treated 4×4 is a pain to take out of the bottom shelf of the shooting cabinet on a regular basis to clean. I just beat the holes closed with a rubber mallet and roll it flat with a piece of steel pipe every few hundred shots and every couple of months when I have 1 too many beers to hit what I’m aiming at I pull it out and take a small gardening shovel to the duct seal and clean a chunk at a time.
The pistol version is just a half inch of duct seal in a small cookie sheet. I clean that with a pair of tweezers after each target. Just made rifle version (to fit on a higher shelf) in a heavy duty 9×13 cake pan. Thin layer of ductseal on the bottom piece of steel cut to fit and 1.5 inches of ductseal on that. Nearly every shoot pentrates to the steel backer. (low power, mostly wadcutters for 10m shooting). I’ll clean this the same way as the monster after it gains 4 or 5 lbs of weight 😈
Casting bullets is all about alloys. Scrap pellets are going to be very hard to control in this respect. The only way out is going to be either make a huge batch and tweak the alloy or make the salvaged lead a small percentage of the total.
The first step is going to be cleaning up the lead by melting it down and casting into ingots of some form. It’s going to be messy with burning all the oil out of the duct seal. I do this sort of stuff in the back yard on the Coleman stove in an old frying pan (never used for food again of course). Let it smoke away. Skim the debris off the top with a big spoon and discard then cast the lead into something metal like a muffin tin.
Makes good fishing and SCUBA weights as is, or fair bullets with enough known purity metals to mix in. Better than ‘battery lead’ but only by a little bit.

i use them for my 9mm and 308 if i had a mold for .22 and .25 i would pore them too :5 :5

What gauge do you estimate it? 2? And that constitutes… How many Pred
tins? 6? 7? Somewhere around 1750 pellets or… 26075 grns? (Assuming
.22 Preds.) You could make a “Guess the number of pellets in the ingot”
game! 😀
