im impressed with some of the new battery tech

i got one of those million candela flashlights that uses a automotive 130/100 bulb….i has a sealed lead/acid battery for a power source….

on the lead acid battery it will shine nicely for about 30 minutes on 130w highbeam

as part of conditioning my new lipo batteries it says to discarge them at 2-7C in my case the batteries are 11.1v 5000 mah so that would mean 10-35 amps….i tried using both the 100 and the 130 filament for 230w for 20 amps…but the wires got really hot…..so just hooked up the 130w for about 11-12 amps

bulb have now been burning for 45 minutes on a battery thats 1/10th size and weight, and it have dropped to 8.7v volts….shouldnt go lower then 9 so i hope i didnt damage the battery(threw it in the charger asap)…but 45 minutes ! impressive.

Well, specifically I am referring to the smaller ones used in the high end flashlights. They can replace CR123, AA, and AAA. 10-20,000 mAh 18650s would be cool. 😆

The laptop packs probably use the same sizes?

Ok, good to know your not running a NIMH conditioning cycle. My rule with Lipos is “just don’t try anything radical”

ahhh good to know i was afraid i damaged the darn thing…its humming along on the charger right now

when i looked on the net it said to condition them for max performance/long life….theres was 3 general suggestions….

1 go race, have fun….
2 go race, but drop a couple of teeth on the pinion, and dont go all out, drive on flat low resistance surface (what fun is there in that)
3 mix of opinions here….all said charge at 0.5C and discharge at 4-7C some said even more….i figured 130w/12v=11 amps or little more than 2 C, i tried discharging at 19 amps…but the 8 guage wire (i think it is could be less i dont know how to guage wire) got very hot to the touch, so dropped that idea but that would be closer to the 4C discharge they suggested

Conditioning 😯 I have never heard of someone doing that to new batteries. I have always heard to just run them down to 1/2 and recharge for the first 2-3 drives.

BTW, You can chill about the 8.7v thing, just don’t try it again. When the batteries get too ow a chemical reaction takes place and the batteries “Puff” and become unusable.

theres was something in the news about a breakthrough…..something with nano tubes offcourse…but they where able to branch out the ?electrode? so you could now charge a battery that would take 1 hour normally in about 1 minute cause they where able to distribute the power more evenly throughout the cell….and it was a simple tech they figured would be out late 2010 …..that could enable charging of cellphones and laptops in a couple of minutes….also the batteries drained better allowing uses in more powerhungry applications without over heating….and lastly they could get more power out of the battery pr weight

the only thing i dont like is how easy these lipo’s catch fire and almost explode…..for a small 3cell you could get 3 feet large flames…and a fireball that would not be nice to happen in the house…let alone the fumes

i gotta get a metal box, and some extension wires so i can enclose that danger, when ever i cant charge outside
