Intank regulator project…

Hello Guys,

I thought I publish my project so far. I have been designing new regulator which will go inside main tank. The reasons are simple;

-it won’t take space between gun and tank
-it’s safe since everything is inside tank
-the big forces are all gone and replaced from stretching to compress
-there is good space for relatively big size regulator chamber which is needed (25ccm) for low pressure and wider pressure-range (more usable shots)
-the firing valve is separated from regulator design so one could use any valve available (although it needs connection thread for regchamber)

I already built two prototypes and tested them on dedicated testbench. The regulation works. I did few hundred of strokes and it regulates the pressure everytime to set value. I still need to examine different poppet-valve sealing materials since I am not 100% happy with current implementation. Over few hour period there is some pressure grawling noticeable meaning that first shot will be little faster than rest.

The difficulty for Talon regulator is the filling. It has to be able to handle bigger forces during filling and also has to pass trhough the air from regchamber to the tank. That was the reason for “inventing” poppet-valve to the regulator. It handles both. Eliminates the bigger forces against regulator-sealing and acts as oneway-valve during filling.

The regulator is designed for 300bar and the regulator body can handle 3x that pressure when it comes to strength.

When used with 100bar pressurerange the accuracy from first to last shot is about 1.6% leading to 1.2m/s velocity drop over whole range. Of course there is little bigger variation during string because of other factors.

This is how it should be assembled to the gun….

The princible of regulator…..

-spring lifts poppet-valve’s stem and air starts to flow from tank over valvestem to the regulator chamber
-pressure in regchamber raises and exceeds springdiscs force and regulator pistons moves to the right. Poppetvalve closes.
-shoot and the cycle restarts
-during refill the overpressure in regulator chamber (against tank) will push the poppet-valve open and air will flow to tank
-the regulation pressure is adjusted with big M14x0.5 thread in the “tophat”
-do realise that the flowchannel in poppetvalve is 10x smaller than through the regulator piston. The pressure is always same one bothsides of piston’s heads. So don’t get confused about the “reverse” design.

It’s not ready yet but it’s a step closer to our common goal… regulated Talon which can shoot consistent shots with wider pressure-range and wider ME range. Next I need to build or get main firingvalve to be able to perform some fieldtests with gun.

AF just bought BKL, and there are a lot of cheaper clamps available on the market. So as far as making something that costs alot which few people will buy, there’s a perfect example. BKL made unique, excellent functioning scope mounts, for a niche market, at a premium cost – and we all bought them eagerly.

I’m not suggesting that AirForce include a regulated tank on all of their guns – I’m suggesting that they make it an available option for those who want it. Much like the micro meter tank.

I sure hope AF markets a regulated tank or someone else produces one. But, I see why they might not bother. The fact is that quality costs money and only volume or short cuts reduce cost. If AF builds a regulator with beautiful machining and flawless performance, it will cost a lot and few people will buy it. If they introduce a budget design with most if not all parts (or the whole thing) made by Chinese low cost labor, it will have poor performance or poor reliability or both and will soon be trashed here.

It is not easy figuring out what the market will bear. Theoretically, one would listen to the consumer but the consumer lies like a bear rug. Unless this regulated tank/gun comes in for a $20 premium and works perfectly for 100,000 shots, AF will get abused from one side or the other. Sinking a bunch of money into a high probability of failure is a good way to kill a business. If AF is working a regulated tank, I’m sure they are doing everything they can to come out with a product they can sell to their market segment that will work well enough to get a good rep and also be profitable so their employees continue to have jobs. That’s not an easy task as far as I can tell.

It’s time to bump this thread, so much talk of these CF paint ball tanks and regulators, and that damned freaking adapter…..

McMike nailed it months ago – if AirForce has a shred of vision for their next generation products, it would include an optional in-tank regulator like this.

I just saved all of the Picts for posterity. So at least we can still stare at them and slobber. 😛

Anybody got any idea if his design will ever see light of day in a Talon? I’m dying to have that regulator inside my Talon’s tank.

You can use the information he posted here. He said we could use it freely for our own use. He did get help from allot of folks on other forums as well as here though.

Nah, you can get Okyas to get you one, since he designed it anyway. He can have his machinist friend build it.
