Interest in Long Range Airgunning.
I would like to start a long range airgun match. Pull ideas from several different airgun/rimfire and centerfire competitions.
There will be some paper punching and some long range work on targets of known size. My thoughts are that anything over 75 yards should be 4 moa in size. This equates roughly to 4.5″ targets @ 100 yards and 9″ targets at 200. These will be simple swinging style targets. During this portion of the match, ranges would be given initially but eventually the shooter would need to learn how to estimate range with his/her reticle.
We have a safe place to shoot with a couple of areas that will reach out to 200 yards, no problem.
What I’m considering is some know distance range work out to 100 yards on the bench/prone and some offhand. Then some opportunities at some targets on the long distance range where competitors would have to setup in a marked shooting position, identify and engage each target. Both will shoot individually and as a team, so while one shoots, the other spots.
I’ve got some questions though.
1. What would you consider a realistic distance for rifles in .22 and/or .25 caliber? Is 200 yards too far for a maximum shot?
2. What power levels should be considered? I had initially considered limiting the power to 50 fpe but that may be a bit unrealistic.
I’ll be able to be more specific once I receive additional input. I’m looking to cater to guys that have powerful rifles, enjoy competition, want to expand their skill set by learning reticle based range estimation if they don’t already know how, calling the wind, incline/decline shooting etc. Everything that one would learn/experience in a long range centerfire rifle match but with airguns and at shorter distances.
Anyway, if you have any input and/or question feel free. If you live in the South East, plan on coming down one Saturday and shoot once we make an announcement.
Thanks,
Paul
