Q:

Interesting rimfire velocities

Now, one thing everyone knows I praise my cz 452 about is how quiet it is. It has a very long barrel, and that seems to keep the noise down.

For example, my favorite ammo is cci standard velocity. At 1070fps, it is right below the sound barrier. When I shoot it out of my 452, it is quiet, enough to where people on the range thought it was somehow suppressed. However, my rem 597 makes a good bit more noise with the exact same ammo. So I figure, they are both shooting the same speed and there is just more space for the gas to expand in the 452. Well, I was partially right…

My brother got some air$oft guns and wanted to check the velocity on them with my chronograph. So we did, but while I had it out I figured I’d see how close to 1070 the rimfires were shooting. The 597 went first and shot at 1075fps. Not far from what I expected. The 452 went next, and it shot 1220fps! I figured it was an error, but the next 3 shots were within 5fps of that.

I got out the aguila SSS to see if they were like that, and they were. 930 out of the remington and 1148 out of the cz.

I know the longer barrels allow the powder to push the projectile more, but that only happens to a point. The cz has a 28″ barrel on it and it is pushing them way faster than the remington. I figured the 28″ barrel was too long and the bullet may actually be slowing down by the time it got to the end, but apparently not.

But anyway, thought some people may find that interesting. I know it shows why my ballistic charts were off when I just assumed it was close to 1070fps. 😆 I do find it odd that even with the extra speed, the cz is still much quieter than the remington. I guess it is just because there really is less compressed gas escaping. 😕

Definitely not what I expected.

I’ll try moving back on saturday. I figure if anything the cz would have less effect because of how much more powder could be burned up in that long barrel, but maybe the 597 using up a lot for the semi-auto helps it. Whatever it is, I’ll move back and see what happens. I just wish it didn’t get dark so early, or else I’d do it after work tomorrow. 🙁

Cygnus, they do make a semi-auto. They just started making it this year, and they only make one, but they do.

To save you the trouble of looking. 😉

yup 3-6 feet back from the chrony

doesnt cz have a semi auto….thats what he has anyway….and year im too lazy to look it up for my self 🙂

lama back up 5 feet from the chrony
if you look at someone shooting there is a blast even from a .22 mostly just a heat wave it looks like but back up and try the chrony again see if the numbers are diff then

According to All I’ve read on the net, most ammo manufacturers tend to pad their stats onTo the high side, so the norm is you almost never get the advertised results. Always lower MV, But your rifle does not have normal length barrel so your mileage is gonna vary? Tremendously!

Haha. Shooting a .223 without earplugs is a joke after you do it with a braked 300. It’s like complaining about being near a firework when the next guy was beside a grenade. 😛

I was a few inches in front of the chronograph. I don’t know if I should be farther back, but I wouldn’t think it would be a big deal. With a big rifle you want to have it back to avoid the big muzzle blast, but there isn’t a big blast off a .22lr. 😛

I’ve always compared the noise between the different rounds in my cz. The ones that are supposed to shoot 1200fps are significantly louder than the standard velocity ones. I’m curious how fast they are actually shooting? They are obviously faster than 1200.

The cb caps in my cz make the same amount of noise as dry firing. But who knows how fast they are going? Looks the the chrony may be getting a lot of use in the next few days. 😆

That is interesting? My 452 Varmint has a 20.5inch/52centimeter barrel. The sound of shooting CCI Stinger’s and mini mag’s both make sonic cracks, just as loud. I really expected the Stingers to make the most noise of all. The muzzle blast difference is with Remington CB long rifle and the CCI subsonic/standard velocity bullets.

The CB’s make a muffled pop and the ss/sv’s just make a low level pop. The hv’s make that sonic crack, about 2x louder!

Just wondering how close were you to the chrony, and what distance is recommended. I never used a chrony so have no idea?

After absorbing muzzle brake blasts from your 300win mag, those rimfires ought to be dam near silent! I forgot my earplugs today when shooting my Rem700 .223 and I could hardly hear my CZ452 afterwards 😯

Yeah, it’s the other way around. cz is bolt and remmy is semi-auto.

But that probably has a lot to do with it.

Oh, and tell your friend he sucks and I want his job. 😆

The CZ 452 is bolt.

the cz is semi auto right ?….then it will probaly open the bolt and vent some of the gass backwards….

i dont know the 597…but if its a bolt action then all gas has to come out the muzzle

a hunting buddy of mine in denmark shoots a .22lr semi too, and he recently got a permit for pigion pest regulation within city limits…so he got the muzzle threaded on both his cz and his bolt action .17hmr (i forget which one) so he could supress them…odly the semi auto suppresion didnt work very well stock…the back pressure from the supressor sinply meant the gasses ventet out the ejection port instead of barrel

how ever his bolt action 17hmr, it worked great….the bullet is super sonic but no louder than a 12-20 fpe airgun

his semi auto he messed around with some alternate spring…and found a heavier one, that with a little modification worked, and all of the sudden his .22lr became quiet

while he was at it he also modded an old .22lr bolt action, he made a shroud for it….he says as long as the bullet are subsonic it is extremely quiet…more so then the talon SS i talked him into (including baffel setup in the frame)

he uses the .17 hmr now for most stuff, the projectile looses energy to the air faster than the .22lr, and with his city shooting that cal. makes it safer should the projectile hit something on the way down

he gets bit more than 3$ per pigion that he either bags or have video of shooting…tat motherfucker….i wish it was me….around the mall where he does most of his shooting he uses an FX2000 with mod and shoots 16 grain JSB

city thinks this is a cheaper way to deal with the massive amounts of pigeons
than setting up nets, spikes etc…and thats even with liability insurance on him….and he gets to hunt when ever he wants….bastard

its quite the speed difference you get on the same ammo, im surpriced…i measured the cci standard vel. out of my R55 to be only 50-100 fps faster than out of my ruger mk3…the r55 is an inaccurate piece of shit….should had gotten a cz instead…
