Jerry’s 6 ring .25 slugs, speed?
Does anyone have a recommended speed for Jerry’s .25, 62 grain, 6 ring slugs? I’m wondering how they’d do in a TJ barrel/Dyotat build.

When one starts shooting slugs, lead depositing is common; the amount varies wildly with the barrel, sizing, lead formula and slug shape. Some coat slugs/lube to reduce the buildup. I’ve seen plenty of thin, lead slivers in the first patches coming out while cleaning.
Pellets will also leave lead deposits and eventually require cleaning the barrel. That has been the case with all the air rifles I own. With the .25 calibers, this is usually every 400-600 shots (w/JSB pellets). If it’s not done once in awhile, the groups open up, and/or there are many more flyers. Yes, the lead formulas for air rifles is usually different; typically a higher percent of lead, resulting in a softer projectile. Often, the rifling grooves are shallower in barrels made for air rifles. Many manufacturers warn against using metal brushes when cleaning the barrel for this reason.
Doug used a TJ, pb barrel on my Condor, so it’s safe to use a bronze brush on it. No doubt, the slugs leave a lot more lead, requiring much more frequent cleaning.
I’ve got my hog shooting lane ready at 60 yds and the bait out but only racoons so far. It’s been raining quite a bit here.
Before my chrony battery died I averaged around 920 or so for 116 fpe, I’m very pleased with that power. The wind was blowing so I was lucky to get some 1″ groups.
Rick, are you getting a lot of lead depositing in the barrel with slugs that tight? I.E.: how often do you need to clean the barrel?
I haven’t even checked my barrel yet. I was under the impression from pyramid air that air rifle barrels rarely need cleaning, not until accuracy gets off. The buildup from the pellets isn’t lead and it isn’t like pb’s (powder burners). The lead from pellets isn’t the same as regular bullets.

The more experienced shooters here can chime and with some better knowledge.
I’ll be going back to the lighter 26 gr pellets soon so I’ll probably use the accuracy from them to justify cleaning.
That’s for sure. He sent some 70 grainers he sized down and at 40 yds. they went clear through a junk car hood, blasting through the top, support beams and into a tree, never to be seen again. 😯 The scope, I suspect, went unstable, so I’m waiting on a verdict from Hawke. Then, it’ll take a lot of shooting, testing, etc. to get the accuracy figured out. Once I get a fair amount of data, I’ll do a more extensive post on the build. Since Doug made a sizer for the gun, that makes it easier to adapt other slugs that might be a few thousandths or ten thousandths too wide.
It’ll take one helluva steel block to protect the chrony.

As I remember, Jerry recommends a min of 800fps. My TSS gun (sometimes) has a TT 18″ .25 barrel and TT hi-flow. The best I can get with the 6 rings in .25 is 825-850fps. That works out to right around 100fp. With Dougs super valve, you will get much higher fps, speed will not be an issue.
Accuracy is pretty good, I have tried Mr.Hollowpoints (Robert Vogle ..I spell it right?)) bullets and they shoot pretty good as well, but I do think Jerry’s slugs shoot a little better.
Thanks for the info. It’ll be good to see what fps delivers the best accuracy at subsonic or a bit above, using the 6-ring, 62 grainers . With the Condor frame, even w/ mods there seems to be more shaking and instability at really high speeds when pushing heavier slugs.

My barrel slugged at .250 and Jerry suggested the .253 which is working out great. They are tight but comfortably when compared to the 43 gr eun jins. I’ve got a pb barrel with Randy’s extreme valve.
I’m shooting the 6 ring 62 gr also and so far I really like them.
I’ve shot 1/2″ groups of two, 2900#, pw @ 5 at 50 yds.
I need to try a hog hunt this week so tomorrow I’ll be sighting in at 60 yds and setting everything up along with the chrony which I haven’t done yet on the slugs.
I’ll post the fps and fpe as soon as I get them.

The TJ barrel needs a slug close to .25040; any idea if these are larger or smaller? I can run ’em through a sizer if they’re a tad over.
Just crank it up. Haven’t heard from anyone who shot them too fast yet…
