Q:

Just bought a S.W.F.A. SS 12×42 30mm Scope

This one is going to go on my new long range rig. It has over 100 MOA and uses the MRAD reticle instead of Mil Dots. There will definitely be a learning curve with this puppy especially when shooting out past 300 yards…..WOOHOO!

I’ve heard nothing but good things on these. Anyone here with any FIRST HAND experience using them?

The short story over on my Blog about the scope:

I just bought SWFA 12x MRAD scope.

It will go on my R3 long .30 :4:

quote DeutschKSK:

How’s the 3-15? I have had my eye on it for a long time. I’d really want to get the 5-20 but the price difference is just too much at the moment.

The SWFA 3-15 is my newest scope and I haven’t used it in the field yet. I looked through it and it looks very clear, the turret clicks feel very good, and construction seems solid. The scope is at gunsmiths now where I am having a custom Remington 700 built that it will be mounted to. We’ll see how it performs when I push it past 600 yards.

I’m a noob when it comes to PCP rifles but definitely not a noob when it comes to real firearms. My first thought was “wow, you guys put SWFA scopes on air rifles???” I guess I’ve always thought of air rifles as backyard toys compared to my AR-15 rifles. Anyway, I have experience with the following scopes: Nikon Monarch, Bushnell Elite Tactical 10x, Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9×40, SWFA 10×42, SWFA 3-15×42. I have these mounted on a variety of AR-15 rifles, AR-10 rifles, and Remington 700 sniper rifles. For center fire rifles, 10x is plenty, and a fixed 10x is and has been a standard 308 rifle scope for military snipers out to 800 yards (though 0-400 yards is a more realistic use). So for a PCP rifle where the max distance you would shoot is 100-150 yards, 10x should be more than adequate. Then again, I guess there is a big difference in target size. I shoot at silhouettes that are a few feet high, not tiny ground squirrels so I guess that would justify a higher magnification. Keep this in mind though. Fixed power scopes are not good for hunting where there is a lot of variability in distance and target movement. Trying to track an animal through your 10x scope at 20 yards is really tough. Fixed scopes are fine for bench shooting. For hunting you’ll want a variable scope like a 3-9x or 4-16x so you can spot and track at lower power, then zoom in for your shot. Also, if going with a variable scope, you have to decide if you are going with a second focal plane scope or pony up the big bucks to get a first focal plane scope. Second focal plane scopes are only zeroed in at one magnification, whereas first focal plane (FFP) scopes are zeroed in at all magnifications. I doubt many PCP shooters have an FFP scope since they are usually $1000+. The SWFA 3-15x is new and is a FFP scope that costs $700 which is dirt cheap for a FFP scope. Maybe I’ll just slap that on my Condor SS (if it ever comes).

You guys have a lot of helpful info in this site. Thanks!

Hello Tofazfou, I’ve been eyeing this scope for the last week and have been undecided between it and the 10x42m, with side focus. I’ll be watching this thread, your blog and your youtube channel to get your ongoing thoughts and hopefully to see your opinion of the 12×42’s rear focusing. BTW, I joined this forum after seeing your long range/cast-bullet videos on youtube. I’ve been shooting spring-piston guns since I was 18 yrs. old, I’m 50, now, and I have zero PCP experience. I ignored PCP for many years, but your videos I could not ignore and therefore I’m here learning all that I can, before laying down my money. Thank you, for all of the effort on your part to share all of the great information that you’ve aquired.

Tof, I think you are really going to like the range of adjustment! 😀 😉

It’s a very good scope for the money! I am considering selling my hawke tactical and getting the 3-15 ffp scope from swfa.

Yeah, You did it right.
