Here is how a nail gun works…very little air to drive plunger but can launch a nail at 1400fps…how about this technology for air gun…http://home.howstuffworks.com/nail-gun1.htm Any thoughts, ideas, semi auto, I really think there is some merit to this principle…Allen.

I own a Crow Mag 111 .25 caliber that has the Air spring and it takes 60lbs to cock the gun…I have no idea how much actual compression it is on a one to one ratio. Now if the air spring had 150lbs compression for the sake of argument as compared to 60 lbs it seems that that slug is going to be moving alot faster….catch my drift? Thanks for all the replys…Allen.

Allen,

I think its a neat idea. If you use the compressed air charge to drive a piston which compresses the air behind the slug; you’re doing something similar to what the NASA light gas guns do. Considering that the charge from a PCP is expanding and thus cooling, the local speed of sound is dropping. A chamber that is getting compessed would be heating and the local SoS would rise. While the total energy could not rise, perhaps the velocity limiting factors could allow a lighter projectile to be expelled at a higher speed.

If I were a gazillionaire, I’d have my boys working on the project right now. OK, maybe that’s a lie; if I were that rich, I’d be watching my “guests” sun themselves on the back of my yacht! But, I’d get to this idea soon!

The factor is the piston diameter in the air chamber, it is typically 2″ in diameter, load that with 100psi and you get a higher pressure number because of the piston’s surface area… If you remove the piston (which drives the nail via a thin piece of metal in a groove) then you are just using a tank with 100psi…

Shadoh: Thanks for the reply…As you know an air nailer works off of about 100lbs of psi to drive a nail…my thought is if the nail gun is only using that much air then would’nt it be benifical in air rifle format…more shots from your airsource, works like an internal regulator…it seems that the plunger would act as a multiplyer…Pneumatic car hoists work the same way…Allen.

I guess what Im trying to say is that you would still be using a high pressure tank as your power source, BUT, now you have a bunch of devices in between it and the pellet that are bleeding away energy that would be better served in pushing the pellet up the tube.

Like a springer airgung or one that has been converted to use a pneumatic cylinder instead of a spring? ) It would be a spring gun without the spring.

My thought was to remove the driver that pushes the nail and have an open chamber to compress air to push pellet…the compressed air from charge bottle would act as a spring driving the plunger forward…ie..air spring…Allen.

It would be fine if you didnt want to use a barrel. Once you put a barrel into the mix you have to deal with all that friction it will provide your projectile all the way up the shoot.
