Q:

Just for sh*ts and giggles

I’ve been getting a lot of request for longer and thicker LDC from people. I try to stick with my normal size which is 1.5 x 6 inches. Effective and looks better. I was in the workshop today and found an old CF tube that I never used. 1.6 x 12 inches, I figured what the heck, let’s see what a 12 inch LDC does. Well my Cricket is set at 880 and there was no puff of air at the exit however, that hammer slap is loud! Definitely louder than the puff of air. I am sure someone standing 10ft or more away won’t be able to hear it. Tomorrow I’ll test it on my .25 R3m which is spitting out 960 fps. My theory is that the pellet will drop a lot. I’ll post updates tomorrow. I won’t be selling these but probably going to send around to people to play with for a week and then pass it on to the next person.

Oh and the full length of the gun is 39.5 inches.

Yes, nice efficient Mod on his 30 cal Matador quieter then the 25 cal from what I’ve been told.

Not an easy task for a symmetrical baffle type Shroud also, monolithic baffle maybe.
The attachment without turn/screwing on is another challenge for other guns as well.

The real “next step” would be a short, large circumference, eccentric cylinder, so we could mount them with the ability to rotate them up or down to match the clearance of the air tube.

A moderator does not need to be perfectly circular, as volume has always been the key to reducing blast pressure, not shape. It would simply need to “vent” the gas into the larger chamber for handling. Ed’s doing it now and I suspect it will be the next big development in shorter, more efficient moderatiors.

Over the years I’ve noted the forum shroud/ldc makers all seemed to go no more than 7.5″ because there simply wasn’t any recognizable gain after that…provided you had proper baffling in the ldc to begin with.

Further, I’d be surprised if there is any measurable pellet drop from a long moderator. The pellet is long gone before the air behind it has any appreciable impact from the moderator’s baffling. This can be seen watching a super slow video of a firearm projectile exiting a barrel, or shroud.

Any examples of these videos?

Absolutely!!! I’ve watched lots of them.

Could you share them with us?

I have, this is a Fat Boy 4″ slider duel chamber LDC that I designed about a year ago for a P-Rod it’s about 33% shorter and just as effective as it’s 6″ longer skinnier sibling.

It fits and works on my 22 FX Revo also.

I also made a 3 stage for my Talon SS 22 cal that’s Fat and 50% shorter than.

Donny, a little info please. Have you experimented with Larger diameter, shorter LDC’s with equal volumes compared to your standard LDC? I would be very interested in your results.
It looks like many manufactures are using this design, FX, Edgun, in 30 Cal and others. Photos of the Impact and WC, show this design, I guess we won’t know how effective they are until it’s in someones sweaty hands!
Inquiring, aging minds want to know!!

I believe with a little Barrel Harmonics the added length and weight of the shroud can contribute to more barrel flipping/flexing.

I had and seen the POI drop when using an extra long shroud/LDC with crony in place with no speed drop.
I rested my hand on the shroud body and shot with the POI being corrected as a result.

My vision for a new improved LDC would be a shorter thicker offset version. Isn’t the edgun shroud offset?

donnyfl , no the AIRFORCE Talon SS is not and doesn’t come set up for an adapter . Tony’s LDC is inserted into the shroud and fastened with the set screw
that you would use for securing the barrel shroud cap . Thanks for the offer .

FROM : THE BIRDMAN

I don’t think anyone has found a real solution to it other than to either lower your FPS or put foam sheets near the breech. That’s the main reason I am looking forward to the Huben K1. Suppose to be hammerless. If everything is what it seems then adding an LDC to that gun should result in True mouse fart.

Shot a mag this morning, there’s not that much difference between the 6 inch and 12. The hammer slap is just louder than anything you hear. Birdman, I am not familiar with the Talon SS platform, do you have a 1/2 x 20 adapter? I am waiting on shipping tubes and will send it to you on Friday if you want to play with it.

How do we get rid of the hammer slap?
