Q:

Lathe or Mill – which to buy ?

From this other thread, so I don’t de-rail that thread:

quote synopsys:

I’d hold out for a real mill. The G0602 lathe or better and a G0704 mill or better. The combo units lack in both departments unless you spend twice what the G0602 & G0704 would be together…

So, if I were to build a piece like this, and only could afford one (lathe or mill), AND I wanted to build other Air Gun pieces (who knows and even other things around the house), which is the better buy: Lathe or Mill ?

Looks like a Grizzly Mini Lathe is what I can afford, store, use, re-sell.

I have one, wish I had gone bigger. They suck for threading. Get something with a quick change gear box and a chuck you can fit some good size bar through.

I know where there is an old 1950s LeBlond with a 6 foot bed, which I cut my teeth on :D, wonder how many sheckles they want for that.

Thanks – Looks like a Grizzly Mini Lathe is what I can afford, store, use, re-sell.

lathe…

A skilled machinist could build that with either one.

But the best first purchase is a lathe. Buy the biggest and best you can afford and have space for, not to mention the ability to move it:D
