Lathe problems – Again

I used my new shop compressor to clean my lathe down (and it is very clean) –

Worked fine for a bit but now unfortunately it doesn’t work anymore – I’m thinking a chip got blown into the controller and shorted it out.

Does anyone know a quick way to check to see if its the motor or the controller ?

Scrap it and get a mans lathe.

Electronic’s Smoke Theory: All electronic components are full of Smoke?

I can and I have proved this theory many times 😳

You can let some of the smoke out and not destroy an electronic component.

If you do Let all the smoke out of the electronic component it is destroyed.

You can not put the smoke back in.

You should be able to test for Voltage , both AC and DC with a good multimeter,

There is also an in-line fuse according to the wiring diagrams at Little Machine shop.

Check for power at the AC plug, then go into the machine from there , tracing it thru the machine in the order it travels thru it.

Be sure to check at connections at emergancy stop and power switches too.

if it’s not the fuse you’ll have to pull that font box with the electrical in it and start poking around with a meter, the first thing I would look at is the speed control, mine is already acting up on me. ring the leads going to the controller out with the ohms meter and then jump the two wires that will run the motor most likely at full speed, that will let you know if it’s the motor or speed controller.

Did you check the fuse?

Also check all the slip on connections to the different electrical parts. Make sure they are on nice and tight.

Also make sure your lathe is plugged in 😛

Touch a good ground. discharge static and then put you thumb on the two IC’s in the sockets and press down on them to make sure they are seated.

heating and cooling will work them loose.

may need to check continuity of harness wires to motor.

I didn’t notice any smoke being let out. Its not exactly quiet so I might not notice anything getting fried or see a flash as the controller board is covered and I have a lot of lighting.

Its 4 years old. I did recently adjust the belt tension – will have to check to see if its just a loose wire.

I’m pretty good with electrical work –

I’ll be able to isolate the problem, I just wondered if there was any obvious signs.

Did you hear a pop or see a flash? Metals chips would cause this to happen. Call customer service or a repair service they may tell you how to isolate motor or controller problem:?

I looked and found no way to divide and conquer this system. ie motor from controller/driver.

Lathe looks new, I would suspect:

1.wiring harness (loose connector) or bad Safety switch problem.

2.Bad solder or component failure (Fuse/transistor/resistor/etc) on circuit board.

3. Last check All fuses and power source.(blew fuse may look GooD)

I generally just do stuff for myself ; Usual airgun things – Hammer’s, barrel’s, shrouds, etc. Also make some astronomy gear – lens holder’s, mounts, tubes etc. Made a few antenna (aerial) mounts and some RC helicopter parts in the past. Plus anything else I might need to make for something, have repaired a few small engine’s and had to modify a couple automotive parts. Some other stuff I’ve forgotton about.

I’ll make things as I need them – once I no longer need them I’ll sell it or if its just as easy/cost effective to make a few due to set-up and materials cost I might knock a few of something out at the same time and sell the extra’s. I’m not inclined to mass produce anything for sale.

BUT as always there are exceptions – Today I was making hammers for tagdagger’s archery kit’s for him.

You’ll be losing fingers next. 😉 😆

What do you actually make by the way? I’m sure I’ve seen stuff of yours but I’m fucked if I can remember what it is. 😕

May I also recommend sand in the gearbox…???
