Q:

Left and Right

hello all,
being that it is raining here tonight i though i would do a bit of maintenance with my babe (stealth)

I have the problem where if i shoot close, 15yards, i hit about 2 inches to the left then at 65 yards i am shooting an inch to the right which gets further to the right at greater distances.

I have got use to it but thought it would be nice for it to shoot in a straight line.

I am not too sure on how to correct this but think i read some where that if you cut and add some file negative (who has that these days?) under the scope mounts it will raise the mounts and allow for a flatter fit.

SO

I have cut a few sheets of plastic from those plastic wallets that you put A4 paper in and placed them neatly under the scope mounts and then tightened it all up.

should this correct the problem or have i wasted 30 minutes? cant to any test shooting until tomorrow (if it has stopped raining)

Good that its the scope mounts and not the barrel then…… 😀

just went out for a quick test and adding those shims moved the poi about 6 inches over to the left at 15 yards.

i adjusted the ‘0’ with the turrets until it was spot on at this distance. i then took two shots at 40 yards and there was no movement left or right.

another test at 50 yards, aiming at a twig just over the width of a pellet and it snapped the twig with a direct shot.

its too wet to bother trying a longer distance shot as the rain will start to interfere.

problem looks to be solved with a few small shims of plastic.

i got the bushes and barrel from drum so they should be bang on. i could always give the barrel a slight twist inside the bushes and try again.

Synopsys – thanks for the info. i will try to make something up and check if it is all lined up well.

I have found that the TriRail is about a half millimeter off center and many scope rings are no better. Someone told me it didn’t matter but they must never shoot at more than one distance or they like to make things harder than needed…

I am beginning to believe that the 3/8″, 11mm or whatever the hell it is supposed to be is never right to begin with. Weaver rail is the cat’s ass. I won’t buy anything anymore that has the dovetail rail, it’s a crappy design and nobody knows exactly where to measure it’s width… So to correct this I came up with the following as a makeshift “dial” indicator for centering my scope over TriRail tolerance nightmare…

I made a multi-contact tool to determine if the scope tube itself is aligned with the frame of the rifle. I used a 3/8″x3/8″x6″ long aluminum stock with holes drilled and threaded in the rough location of the upper and lower frame rails and scope tube. (See the drawing)

Then take an allen flat head bolt, tight fitting (use lock nuts if needed) and set the lower and upper frame bolts so the square rod is parallel to the the frame (lock nut them in place if needed). Gently adjust the upper bolt until it touches the scope tube.

Take the whole rig and flip it to the other side of the rifle in the same location. If there is a gap at the scope tube then the scope is off to the first side measured. If there is a gap at the upper frame rail then the scope is off to the side it is sitting on…

Half the width of the gap is the thickness of the shim you need to center the scope or rails. Alternating the locations of the frame or scope bolts you can check the TriRail and rings.

Now if the barrel is really out of whack you will find deviation when changing you relative distance to target. If your good at geometry you may be able to figure out which way the barrel is out and shim accordingly…

I made a post about this about a year and a half ago… I’ll see if I can find it…

You need to truly zero your scope first before you shim. You can’t accept a POI 2 inches to the left at 15 yds and then expect any accuracy beyond that, doesn’t matter where the pellet hits at 65 yds.

Get the pellet dead center on target at 15 yds. and then work out from there. 😉

I’m thinking if the scope has been adjusted to compensate for the barrel pointing a bit right, up real close at 15 yards, thats gonna put the pellet left of the poa, and right of poa out past the zero….??

Bushings would put the pellet off to the same side no matter the distance wouldnt it? It sounds like you have your scope canted to one side or its messed up internally. My guess anyway.

You happy with the barrel bushings? No misalignment going on there?

yep

you mounting the rings direct to the rifle rail??

free hand, bipod, and racked.

i am thinking that the scope mounts are not fitting perfect and adding some ‘shims’ will help get a better fit.

Shimming the scope with film (or aluminum, etc) will correct for barrel droop or scope run-out on the vertical plane, but I’ve never heard of anyone using them for correction on the horizontal.

Do you get the same left-right results when shooting the gun fully bench-rested?
