Leyla .22 Shot String
Well Finally got the New Chronograph (oehler 35p) to do some shot strings with the Leyla. (my Old PAC died after 10 years or so…. So I did a little up grade) and no NOT from Lead Poisoning…..
These are the results on Original “Factory Settings” with 16 gr JSB (5.53) Average FPE 21 (total shots through the gun are approx 700-800) I have made no adjustments.

shot a few of each at 20 yards on paper. Again just a quick test. Both
pellets looked like they would group fine. As far as which will be the
absolute best…. That will take a little more work. I plan on keeping the

HNFTT are NOT good at those velocities, – they tend to spread. Best used in springers at lower fps……
In .22 there are really only three pellets that work above 800 fps, (but start spreading above approx. 1000 fps): JSBs 15.89 grs, JSBs 18 grs and HN Barracuda Match 21.14 grs…..
Watch the batch numbers though and find a batch that is good. Barras have been reported to have uneven skirts every now and then. That said, airguns are like women, – they may look the same, but they perform differently. All depending on what you feed them with. Some (most) like domeshaped things, few like hollow points, very few like the flat headed short stuff…….
AND head size matters. One lady may like the thinner ones (5,5 mm) where as some prefer the thicker ones (5.51, – 5.52, – even 5.53). 99% of the time I would use the 5.52s (Barras and JSBs) and they work mostly all the time with good results in the majority of my high speed LWbarreled rifles ( I have a few 😳 ).

My guess: The Lelya in .22 would be at her best with JSB 15.89 or 18. She is not designed for more I think………
H&N Field Target Trophy .22 Cal, 14.66 Grains, Round Nose, 500ct $11.99 at Pyramydair.com (out of stock) and $15.50 at AOA, apparently in stock.
I have used H&N Barracudas before, and was much impressed with the quality of manufacture, consistent weight, and overall domed pellet looks. They simply LOOKED like someone had taken care when making them. I never found one bent skirt in the boxes I received. These were 21gr. I am assuming the 14.66gr FTT pellets would be of similar quality. Customer reviews were quite good.
So, if I wanted to get a Lelya .22 up into the 800+ fps range, it appears the 14.66 gr might get the job done without tampering with Ed’s original valve and regulator settings. I really doubt the 1.5 grain difference would make any difference to anything shot within the effective range of the little pcp.
If Ed can break bottles at 80 meters with caliber .117, it seems the .22 should break some necks and crack some skulls at the same distance, accuracy permitting. Until tested, no one really knows how these pellets might perform, or whether it is worth dropping the 1.5 gr to get the fps increase.
Any opinions on whether 16gr at 775 fps is better/worse than 14.66gr at 825+ fps???

i am thinking that you would gain about 70 fps with the 14 grain pellet.???? over the 16

The 18gr are fast. The 25gr are still moving right along.
Here in Toad Suck, I’d use the 18gr on deer sized and down, with eyeball shots out to 150 feet.
For black bear, of which we have a lot, I’d definitely go the 25gr pellets for a head shot if I can sneak within 75 feet or so. I wouldn’t try beyond 100 feet because at some point even a head shot isn’t going to do the job and that can get risky.
Ed, if you read this, does shooting heavier pellets at factory settings harm the valve?

More information and testing.
While doing some additional chronograph work. At one point the Leyla would not cock the hammer. After removing the action from the stock I noticed the “Power Adjusting” Screw had completely backed out. After reinserting the screw to approx factory position. The 16gr JSB were at 810 FPS. I backed out the adjuster 1 1/2 turns and returned the 16 grainers to 775 fps. Prior to setting the action back in the stock I ensured the “set screw” was fully engaged against the “Power Adjusting” screw
18gr JSB. (approx 21 FPE average) ES for 32 shots was 9 fps

With regards to 16gr predator pellets I am not sure of the real advantage of these on small game and pests.
This morning I took a few starlings between 35 and 45 yards. Most shots were side on through both wings. The leyla is sighted in at 34 yards, according to Chairgun this gives me a 1/2 inch point blank range between 14 yards and 37.5 yards. At this velocity the pellet still has 15.6 ftlbs at 37.5 yards.
Using a 1″ kill zone the point blank range is 10.3 yards to 43.5 yards, at this velocity the pellet has 14.8 ftlbs of energy at 43 yards.
For rabbit size game my understanding is that 8 FPE is required to make a humane kill.
For me this is Little Gun is a real keeper… Compact size and great performance.
I wonder how the Predators with the plastic tip would do on these critters?
Further, a reduction in pellet weight to around 14 gr should increase velocity and still retain substantial impact without affecting the valve.
Not much experimentation done on this little beauty yet, much to be learned.
