Q:

Lighter pellets at lower FPE

I am just curious whether anyone has tried to shoot the Mutant (standard or short) at a lower energy level with PBA pellets. I know the Mutant is not a plinker or target gun, but there is no reason why it cannot also serve that role with the HST being so flexible to adjust the power down. On my Shorty, one more turn from 13 FPE out drops muzzle velocity shooting 14.35gr pellets to 400 fps. At that level, the little gun is truly mouse fart quiet even without Donny’s Fatboy!

If there is no existing data, I will probably get some in after 12/8 because that’s the target delivery date of a bunch of PBA pellets :biggrinn: . PBA pellets are not cheap, but they have some unique advantages for short range, low power and flat shooting. The big question is how well the Mutant deals with such low energy level shooting.

Will keep the group informed even if someone is to insult me for turning such a wonderful (and powerful for its size) gun down to a target gun  .

I looked in pyramid air catalog and they had some Wadcutters 22 pellets at 7g RWS for like 500 for 6.99 That’s pretty cheap
Not sure how the CZ barrel will like the pellets, Get you a Linstone barrel They are not pellet picky at all,
D man could hook you up with a barrel,

Just adding a little more. These FTT greens are proven quite deadly (in terms of accuracy and energy delivered) to small pests (including furry tail ones) within 30 yards, even with a humble muzzle energy of 10.5 FPE. I am not even going to bother with testing shot count because the pellets are expensive, and there is enough shot count for sure!

I am quite impressed by the flexibility and utility of this little pup (mine is a Shorty). I am waiting until next spring to test the long range capabilities against some ground squirrels.

Looking forward to your results!

Well, I found a tin of H&N field target trophy green pellets (9.56gr) and was able to test it a little.

After turning out the HST by a quarter turn from the 13 FPE position, the Shorty is spitting out these shiny little pellets at 701fps for a little over 10 FPE. Except for the first shot, everything went into the same hole at 10 yards. Not a ragged hole, a clean hole.

This is one of few guns that I own that shoots this light pellets well. A very rough estimate of the BC is about 0.020, not too bad for a really light pellet. According to Chairgun, the projectile still has >7FPE at 30 yards.

I’ll evaluate the other light pellets as they arrive some time next week. There is one winner already!
