These are the basics I reckon I need, I’m hoping you chaps that know what’s what can recommend some brands (that don’t cost a fortune, I don’t really want to be spending £300 on a micrometer for instance 😯 ), and suggest anything obvious I’ve forgotten.

I went Chinese generic stuff for pretty much everything listed except taps and dies – Those always sucked so I ended up getting a set from Sear’s.
Not sure how US prices compare to UK, but most things would be cheaper on this side of the pond at a guess so you might want to give eBay a try and see if you can find a friendly seller over here that will combine shipping to the UK.
