Q:

long barrels?

hi can anyone tell me what is the longest barrel that i can put in to my gun iv got a gunpower stealth .22 under 12flb its got the standard 12inch barrel in it just now and a standard silencer with 3 inch add on aswell.

i would like to get a much longer barrel and silencer for better accuracy and consistency and to quieten it down a bit more at the muzzle end.

BUT…

will adding a really long barrel and silencer actually make any difference to my gun under 12flb and can you add silencers to the end of the long barrel’s?

if anyone has any pictures of a stealth or talon with a long barrel can you let me see them?

also what would it sting me for a long barrel in pounds?

thanks

As far as the comparison of a 2″ handgun barrel vs a 24″ barrel goes, that only applies if using iron sights. When a scope is being used, you can’t tell how long your barrel is. A shorter barrel is often more accurate because it is more rigid and whips around less when fired. I have been told that given a particular gun shooting a particular load, the barrel basically vibrates much like a sin wave and ideally the barrel would be cut to length so that the crown is placed exactly at a point where the sin wave crosses over 0. That way, even with the vibration, the bullet or pellet leaves the barrel in the same place everytime. Allegedly a guy can use rings of some kind, placed loosely on a barrel when fired, so that he can find the sweet spot. The rings settle in the places the barrel vibrates the least. I’ve never done any custom barrel work myself, I just shoot them as they come from the factory.

No worries fella, to say i was not clear would be an understatement… Lazy in trying to explain something (again) it always makes sence when i read it but then i know what i am trying to say 🙄

Sorry about my last post Brutus it was a bit confusing, I was simply thinking about pure ballistics. I am impatient and posted before I had even read any but the first post. 😳

You are totally correct a longer gun can be much easier to steady. This is even more true on open sights where you can get the sights further apart. Like in the Airforce Edge. eg, Even though the edge only has a 12” barrel the body of the gun it self is extended for the very reason you mentioned. 🙂

quote Zilog:

A longer barrel will not actually help accuracy.

To make what i was trying to say more clear,

If you take hold of a 4 inch barrel and line up the barrel so that you think you are aiming at a target it will look good

But

If you extend this barrel to 20 inches and line up the barrel you will see the slightest movement of the barrel that would not be noticed on a smaller barrel.

The length does not make any difference to accuracy but does help you see the slightest of movements when aiming a rifle.

Other comments made by Zilog i agree with and would say that if staying at the 12FPE limit 177 will give the easiest trajectory to shoot with as it is so flat .20 is a good comprimise with hitting power and trajectory. however if you step up to FAC power 22 can get the same trajectory and then your onto a winner.

A longer barrel will not actually help accuracy. Well apart from it will get the end of your gun a few inches closer. With 12lbft you could actually cut a fair few inches off at this power with no detriment to assurance. Well assuming you could still fit it securely. (edit, I was talking purely ballistic trajectory actual weight and balance of gun may vary and may effect the accuracy you achieve with the gun)

There is also a big down side to bigger barrels and that is weight. The barrel is one of the heaviest parts of the gun. Not only do you make the barrel longer but you also have to make it thicker at the same time to stop any flex. I have a 24” barrel and it’s a hefty bit of kit.

If you are after better accuracy I would be tempted to get your self a .20 or .177 barrel. You will get a much flatter and consistent trajectory.

i have loaded my Stealth with a 24″ BSA barrel and had it cut for a silencer and it works great.

You will need to adjust your TH down a bit to keep in the 12FPE limit. In my opinion a longer baller will give better accuracy – think of a hand gun with a 2″ barrel your not gonna know what you are aiming at. stick a longer barrel there and you will notice any and all movement.

i brought mind from Drum so it cost a lot but it is worth it as the quality is great. you can get it done a lot cheaper from others.

12″ Will get you there. Longer will get you there with less air. But you need to downtune. Stuffing in a longer barrel without using a different valve setup will probably put you over the legal limit!
In short the longer barrel will give you a bit more shots. But it also increases locktime a bit. Thus more time for you to pull the shot!

Hope this helps!

Regards,

Marc

I think that since you are power restricted it would be a waste of time. If you had no power restrictions then I imagine you would aid pellet stabilization by increasing the length and at the same time, the “twist”. I may be wrong, but my gut tells me: Don’t waste your money.

from what ive read the acuracy is the same and sometimes better out of a short barrel
you gain fps with length
maybe someone who knows what their talkin about whill chime in
