Q:

Looking for an affordable First Focal Plane scope.?

I have yet to start the days of clicking and reading to research the purchase of a new FFP scope for my new mutant.22. I thought it might be better to ask for suggestions on here first. I know ffp is an expensive upgrade for scopes but i still have to ask, is there one that is on the affordable side?
I currently have a hawke 4x12x50mm and i like it well enough, but it is difficult to see the hold overs for those longer range shots. With the mutant i could use a little more magnification , because you can really reach out with this gun.
I dont really have a bottomline on what I’m willing to spend , mainly because i haven’t the slightest idea on the costs getting into an ffp…
A question i do have. Is there any disadvantage to first focal plane scopes over second,?

I ended up going with the Athlon Argos. Far better scope than I expected, and not only bright and crisp, it ranges very well! Ranging was NOT one of the criteria of picking up this scope. In fact, I did not notice that it would for the first day of testing. But you won’t believe how well tis Scope shots the BOX. Just perfection!

The second day, I noticed that at my 76 yard target, I happened to look at the focus dial, and it was showing exactly 76 yards. I tried it at the 36 yard target, and the 51 yard target. Yep, perfect again. Tried it at a lasered 100 yards, and yep! Perfect again. I will be trying it at longer ranges as soon as the weather permits.

I have never been so pleasantly surprised with a scope. Much less at this price point. At this point, all I can say, is superb. And as a lot of you here know, I am an optics NUT. It takes a hell of a LOT to impress me. In fact, this is the first scope I have played with that hasn’t disappointed me in over a year!l

My Hat is off to Athlon!

I don’t see how anything could beat the athlon at that price. Other than the super bright reticle, even in the lowest setting, it is a ton of scope for the money.

Athlon optics on sale right now on amazon. Just got a talos btr 4-14×44 for 253.99 and the argos btr 6-24×50 is 313.99.

Thanks for the input, I’m in the US and prefer to buy made in usa when possible but not exclusively. I stumbled on brand that has what seems affordable ffp, Sun Optics. But i need to look at what people are saying about them that arent biased..

The only company I know of making it’s own scopes in the U.S is U.S Optics. They are affordable if you can afford one. It’s relative. You’ll spend more than $300.00 for one: http://www.usoptics.com/product-category/optics/
One company here in the U.S sells really decent scopes. Though they are made in Japan this company has an excellent rep for scope quality at a moderate price: http://swfa.com/Classic-C12502.aspx Of course they offer other brands too: http://swfa.com/Riflescopes-C1443.aspx
FYI many companies have their scopes sourced overseas, mainly in Asia. Depending on the quality of glass they insist on, the price goes from a few $$ to a few thousand $$.

Depending on what you want to spend.
Athlon agros btr will provide you with ffp, more magnification, and affordable price. They also have a lifetime warranty. Also realize that better glass will get you further with less magnification. You could consider the 12×44 edgun fixed power. It is supposed to have good glass and a reticle designed for airguns. It is also affordable. Hope that at least gave you a few additional options to think about.

Take a look at the new MTC & Sightron line….

In my opinion the ONLY advantages of a FFP are found in hunting situations, for Target shooting SFP is by far the best. But that is my personal opinion.

As to affordable it all depends on where you live, US or EU? Also you should have some sort of budget or the best one would be a March 3-24×42 or 3-24×52 FFP scope.but they are costly indeed. In the EU there is a cheap (yet made in Japan) option but it is Limited to 14x and has a very thick reticle that is not Target shooting friendly. I have no experience with Athlon optics but if you don’t mind the extra weight of a chineese Optic they have a few FFP with nice looking reticles.
