Q:

anybody got any recent news as to the current state of quality of LW barrels? ive been a bit apprehensive about getting another yet because of the horror stories i been hearing about the “joint shaped” cross sections(breech end choking and a larger, looser midsection) and widening tolerances. i partly believe the breech choking due to turning for the AF platform(button rifled barrels relax inward, correct?). i understand big A does a lead in for slug loading, that i imagine would help this a little. anybody have this done? i PMed him a while back bout this, havent heard back. if im finally gonna go quarter bore, im gonna do it right… 😎

anybody know if mac1 still does the hw barrels for AF rifles?

I was curious to hear about the barrel as well from assman. Would like to know the results of the 30″ barrel.

anybody heard anything from assman83 lately? i pointed him to lilja for a custom barrel, and WIH turned it, but i never heard anything since…

I don’t believe LW has fixed their QC issues yet and I don’t believe they are doing anything about poor barrels or mis-sized barrels in the field. There is no excuse for fat in the middle barrels and then changing the barrel size randomly and without warning is BS too.

I’m happy to see that DaveG is getting great results with ST barrels as maybe the competition will drive higher standards across the market.

Button rifled barrels gain in ID when the OD if cut and BSA hammer rifled barrels tightens when the OD is cut. However heat would come into play, I would think that heat would tighten a button rifled barrel

hope so…how did you go about reaming the breech? did you just take down the lands, or lap the whole interior surface?

btw, how is the whole casting bit going? i had high hopes for the original ones you had made couple months ago…

Moneyshot,

I have had two 25 barrels from LW.

The first was the double choked wide in the middle type you describe, it did not shoot well. I suspected that it had collasped down from machining the AF stinger on the breech end. The breech choke was exactly in that area.

The second was from the latest run that everyone had to wait on. It measures .255 to the choke where it narrows down to .251 for the last inch.

It chambered 22 Kings quite well, but I opened mine up slightly to .2535 for the 251-50 rn RCBS bullet. After than it was looser in chambering Kings, but shot the same, which is in the .50 to .60 range at 50 yards.

I am in between molds right now, but when I do get the mold thing figured out, I will have someone make me a cutter to ream the lead out to the exact size of the .255 cast bullet I use or do the work on a lathe for me.

So I would go for it, they seem or at least this last barrel seems to be a good barrel.

Regards,

Roachcreek
