Q:

Lower PW Setting and Better Accuracy ?

I lowered my PW on my 25 cal Condor and although my 34gr JSB KH’s are still flying out over 1000fps (to fast), my 43 gr EJH’s are giving me great accuracy at around 945fps. I’m getting about 7/8′ at 60 yards. This is all with the PW set to 5/1 ! The JSB’s are in at over an inch, they shot well when velocity was in the 960fps range.

No other mods except a small washer under the Top Hat and about a 1/8 twist up for stroke length. I’m wondering if the softer hammer hit is helping accuracy a bit ?

Jsb king capable of doing figure 8 doing 5 shots grouping. My best 50m grouping was 1.5x pellet size diameter hole in 6 shots. I couldnt handle the pressure on the 7th. That was without regulator doing 900fps. Was with oring too. Before using regulators, my best tune was 6fps variation in 30 shots at pw6. I made my own valve and tophat so that setting would be different for others. At pw5 and 7 i get 13fps variation and spreads get bigger away from pw6. If you can shoot accurately at 975 thats great. Now i always use 2 different bottle with 2 different setting. One to shoot accurately with low psi regulator to shoot 880fps jsb king, and another to shoot heavier stuff. The beauty of airforce guns

generally, in a pellet gun, you are looking for consistency and stability of flight.

if accuracy is what you after which is the most important, then a chrony is pretty much the bible here. most pellet will go spiraling at high speed. my gun shoots better grouping at 40m than at 10 15m at 980 1000fps. at close distance, pellet is still wobbling out of the muzzle then stabilize at 30m above.

if you ever look at those who compete at 10m, then shoot at 500-600ish fps. my 25m benchrest gun shoots at 800fps, and will do shit at 40m and above due to variation of drop.

i generally dont like to play with pw since it involves tightening up the spring. i keep them at the normal length and heavier hammer to ensure opening the valve all the way everytime. you can restrict the valve to tune. i use different valves and tank to run different pellet and slugs. to play with light weights such king, i prefer regulator to squeeze more accuracy.

So far with my Condors my PW setting is around 5 to 6 for everything, using the standard spring and hammer/weight set up.

I do though use a O ring and make adjustments to the Top Hat after I put in the O ring as the travel distance will be shorter because of the space taken up by the O ring. All my Condors shoot JSB KH’s in the 975+ area.

Before you buy anything else, buy an F1 Chrony. Indispensable tool!

I’m went thru the power wheel pressure dance with weekend with my Condor SS. I noticed what many others have said, “Every Condor is different.” I adjusted my power wheel from 6-8 to 4-8 when my pressure reached about 2300 and noticed my .25 cal 25.4 gn pellets were still hitting in the 960s. I filled the tank to 3000 and the first shot dropped to 640 or something ridiculous. Kept at it all afternoon Sunday and decided that the best adjustment for my gun was 7-3. Accuracy was still acceptable and the 25.4 were reaching 1004 fps on a nice bell curve of 27 shots. I was getting 1/4 inch accuracy for most of the pellets at 25 yards, and 1 inch to .75 inch groups at 50 yards (although I would have a couple of 5 shot group blow-outs for some reason.

Playing with JSB Exact Heavy at 33.xx grns and those appear to be a bit more accurate at 50 yards, but at PW 7-7 to 8-8. Only got 20 good shots, but it seems like a good setting for hog hunting. I just need more time (and pellets) to see how they shoot. Note: pellets were weight sorted to 1/10 gn. I also had to seat the 33 gn pellets further in the barrel with a small bamboo stick. I tried to be consistent but seating varied by as much as 1/16 of an inch. I’t didn’t seem to make much difference in POI.

One of the first things I do is put an 008 or 009 “O” ring under the Top Hat, I then need to turn the Top Hat out about an 1/8 of a turn so the Top Hat stroke stays about the same distance as without the “O” ring (~.090). I then fill to about 2900psi and lower the PW to about 5/1 as a starting point with the pellet I plan on using at a reasonable velocity that I know the gun can deliver….I take a reading, if the speed is to high I will lower the PW, if it is to low I will turn up the power wheel. If the PW is over 7/1 on the first shot and my velocity is not up to snuff, I will turn the Top Hat another 1/16 of an inch up and see what she does.

I’m looking for a lower than 5/1 PW and a velocity that is a START on a bell curve. The velocity you pick has a direct bearing on your number of shots as does the weight of the pellet, so be realistic.

I try to keep my first shot with my lowest weight pellet of choice around 950 fps … it will tend to rise and then drop depending on pellet weight. The lightest pellet I shoot in 25 cal in KH’s at 34gr, PW set at 5/1 … EJH’s at 43gr and 39gr slugs are set at 6/1 and a starting velocity of ~945 fps.

Just some thoughts, and remember the PW settings are reference marks, no relation to what someone else s gun is getting …. ESPECIALLY if the Top Hat distance is changed a bit like I do !

I lowered the PW another one complete turn today (5/1). JSB’s are coming out at ~975fps, the gun seems to group OK keeping shots in the tight 1 1/8″ circle at 60 yards. This pellet is my general pellet for Ground Squirrels, Jacks, Pigeons and that kind of general hunting stuff. The EJ’s are for Jacks and medium range “call in “YOTES” (50-65 yards) … having over over 50fpe at that range.

My 39gr slugs are for “Yotes” primarily in the 70-85+ yard range (~60fpe) —— they keep their velocity so well, they still have 50fpe at close to 150 YARDS !!! The BC of these slugs is so great, they pound any pellet into the ground. I have them for serious predator hunting … not wasting these on some crappy GS or pigeon, that’s for sure ! The BC according to LabRadar reports is .092, I use Chairgun for downrange figures using Labradar’s BC #’s and figure the BC in at .090.

I did not shoot the EJ’s at this 5/1 PW setting as the EJ’s need to be flying out of this gun fast (940-950fps) for heavier game. At this speed the EJ’s hit very hard giving me 50fpe at 65 yards, plenty of smack for good size predator critters if I do my part !
