Lurker Comes Out From Behind The Shroud!

First off being my first post, I would like to thank you all for the high caliber, one stop shop with regard to all things Air Force. Great sites like this don’t just happen. Thanks to all for shortening the learning curve for yet another newbie!

I have been an air gunner since about 1964 when my parents gave me my JC Higgins .22. Boy did I luck out there. Yep, the parents where pretty cool, but the old multi-pump has been a friend thru thick and thin. Still feel like I am cheating on her with the new Talon SS/22-caliber.

Scroll to here… Several things have contributed to my evolution to the SS, but sound suppression was a major factor in my decision. While the stock 12 inch SS was a great improvement over the multi-pump (with the report of a .22 rim fire), it was not as quiet as I thought it should be.

I studied the choices of shrouds here and thought I would make my own, but when I saw the machine work Rodney is turning out I thought I would give his handy work a try. I would like to be really clear by stating that I am not putting down the craftsmanship of any of the other air smiths out there by sharing my one time, non scientific findings. This is not a comparison. All that said, I feel like the SS is now like I anticipated it being stock out of the box.

Whether the hammer is set at max or 6-13 the sound seems the same. More air escaping at higher settings, but no louder from one setting to the next. I do hear the hammer slap or bottle ping now and the smack of the pellet hitting the target. My shooting buddy, three feet away, said he could not hear the action so we conducted a very scientific experiment – he fired off some shots without changing positions and sure enough, I could not hear the gun action either.

It is so quiet you would think there has been a lost of power, but neigh says the Chrony! No sighting in of the scope either. Shoots with the same accuracy I had before the mod.

Now, if I can just restrict myself to the tree rats that want to die in my back yard I might be able to keep my liberal pinko neighbor happy?
