Q:

LW – whats the deal?

Been hearing complaints lately about some LW barrels not being accurate.
Has LW compromised QC?.

Reason for asking: Considering purchase of AF rifle.

How does one slug a barrel?

Great, at least 3 barrels measured to 5 significant digits and none are close to each other or what a .25 air gun should be! Other than that, these barrels are awesome!

Fat in the middle or tight in the middle, what’s up with LW? Did they start pulling the buttons through twice as fast to increase production? It used to be that the Korean barrels were consistently larger and I could recommend a .253 slug for those guns vs. a .251 for a LW barrel. Apparently, I need to tell LW owners they have custom barrel calibers and Korean gun owners that they need to be happy they didn’t buy a LW barreled gun!

At this point, all I can tell anyone is that they have to slug the barrel and we’ll size to match. That’s hard to do if the middle of the bore is .254 or larger and the end is .251 or something else!

Could mean it’s tighter or there is more friction (roughness) from the cutting of the rifling…

I have a late 2011 (mid November) 177 barrel that is fantastic. Haven’t slugged it but it’s wicked accurate. 😉

Crap. I just slugged 2 of my LW barrels. The dechoked and choked barrels measured right around 0.2543-0.2546.

So, what size slug would be best? 0.255? Would it be possible to take a 7 ring slug (0.251) and tap it with a hammer (to fatten it up) and then resize it with a 0.255 die? Or am I talking nonsense-silliness?

Also, I noticed when I was tapping the slug through the barrel, I felt a little more resistance near the middle of the barrel. Does this mean anything? I cleaned the barrel (with cotton patches) before slugging.

It really is something that needs to be checked.

As tooling wears out the tolerance change in the product.

Sounds almost like you might as well be using a FX barrel.

Mine slugged at .25495 goove diameter, I sent a slug to Eric at Hollowpointmold and he measured it prior to doing some work on a mold for me.

The choke was .251.

Well that isn’t encouraging at all. 😕

It’s pretty screwed up to making barrels that slug at .251 with the choke cut off and then a couple years later be making them at .253+. I used to be able to consistently recommend to customers they buy their slugs sized to .251 if they had a LW barrel. Now, I have to consistently recommend they slug the bore.

Depends on what you want. I won’t buy anymore choke less barrels from them. They are not .250″. The one I have measures .25340″.

From what I understand, most of the problems were 2 to 3 years ago. I don’t hear much about it anymore. From what I hear now, seems they have the problems ironed out.

Has anyone heard any different?

KnifeMaker.

I have slugged a few, and know their internal dimensions vary from batch to batch. With pellets that can be a fatal flaw. With cast bullets you just size for the groove diameter,

I have had four 25 caliber barrels from them, three shot pretty good, one was a complete dud and the dealer RL replaced it for me.
