Q:

Lyman Ideal 285377 bullet mold

I found this vintage bullet mold on ebay and did everything possible to buy it because I think it could be a winner for long range shooting, bc found on internet and handloads too: .427. I don’t have a gun for it but I have a .280 REM LW barrel 25.7″ long, 1:10 twist, 4 groove and a project in progress.
Some pictures posted by the seller:

I also found a picture of a bullet cast with this type of mold:

It is the first from the right and has 148 grains.

Oh Hell yeah, you are not trying it. YOU ARE DOING IT!
Absolutely!
You got a great foundation laid out, I dont doubt your success. Please do keep us informed of your progress. Were you able to win your bid and secure that mold? I noticed a couple of the original vintage Ideal 257420 molds over the last week. I think I am going to going to go a little lighter than that… but I still have a few more things to accomplish before I have to cross that bridge and I will likely be purchasing my intial cast from RJ. Not intially looking forward to casting lead if I dont really have to, but it is so cost effective and besides whatever fodder I find myself to end up using, I want to fully back it up with my own casting equipment regardless if I am buying them. I believe in having the redundancy.
So you are going to be turning alot of meat off of that barrel! Maybe make it a bull barreled airgun…. That LW barrel sure looks expensive! Those are hammer forged twist? I wonder if removing metal around the circumference has any impact on the metallurgy or consistiency of the internal stresses within the barrel. I dont really even fully know what I am talking about, but might be somewhat worthy to look a little bit into, just to fully understand if there may be any factors to consider that might skew or influence the performance in unforeseen way?
Very cool project! I believe we are going to see some awesome projects popping up all around here soon. I can hardly wait to see some of these projects take flight! :8:

That is, you do not know until you try but I’m optimistic especially as I read a few reviews about this bullet. From what I read its diameter after casting (20:1) is .285, and LW barrel is .28405, so I ordered the LEE .284 sizer.
Yes, with the barrel will have a lot of work because:

😥
Project in AUTOCAD look about it
but not yet completed.
As an idea: LW barrel will be reduced to 15.95mm OD, air tube will be 700 cc and will be charged at 4100 psi and for the start I’llgo with 200 g hammer weight, 107 N spring and 34 mm travel.

As so often happens, ,, ya never know until you try it! You will want alotta valve like dyotat builds. Will want to slug that barrel and have a sizer to make sure those slugs are .005″ to the bore. I dunno how much work you will havevto do to that barrel but those tj liners are cheap enough.
Keep us posted with your progress!
