Q:

Maddog Ultima benchrest modification

Made a little mod to the MadDog Ultima Short on my Condor SS today to facilitate benchrest shooting. Going off a suggestion from Dough at MadDog I drilled and tapped a 10-28 hole in the bottom of the stock but, then made an adjustable rubber-footed insert. In combo with a little 6″ bipod this gives a nice stable bench shooting platform and by rotating the new butt-bottom pad up and down I can make sub-moa elevation adjustments. Hardened the threads in the wood with superglue and re-tapped; figure if they wear out there is plenty of room for adding a metal insert.

How do you like you stock i am looking at ordering one of the Maddog stocks

Oh My! That is one sexy bitch! LOL 🙂

Please post data on pellets and shot strings when you can.

I really like it; nearly as sturdy as a Pelican, locks, fits the gun well.

Where did you buy the guncase and foam?

Scope arrived yesterday at long last. Finally have the gun put together the way I want it; can’t wait to see what it can do now that I have a scope commensurate with the Condor’s abilities. Love the Mil-Quad reticle on this SWFA scope!

I think their ‘train derailment’ has to do with automated shipping equipment – your package wasn’t kicked into the correct bin. LOL

Definitely toss up some pics when its put together. I can never turn down good gun porn.
🙂

If I think the bottle/cheek pressure is a problem, I will just bed the bottle to the stock with Marine Tex. You can’t get any more precise than that!
Have fun…………

I liked your idea and was thinking of adopting it. Weatherstripping seems too soft to do much, though, so I was thinking of gluing a hard rubber pad between the stock and the back of the tank.
Really, though, I think the alleged frame-flex issue is overblown. This thing is pretty stiff and I very much doubt the gentle side-pressure from my cheek is causing any significant flex. If one is clenching so tight that the frame flexes, I suspect the better solution is in modding one’s hold rather than one’s gun. Still, locking tank to stock somehow does have a strong abstract appeal, even if I don’t think it’s really necessary 🙂
UPS now says might scope should arrive today :). :). 🙂

Thanks! I did not know that. Their coating should be just fine……I’m putting one on my Condor SS too, if it ever gets delivered!
What are your thoughts on running weatherstripping on the stock under the tank to get rid of any flex caused by cheek pressure against it? I was going to try it, but its tough to create a plan when all you have is pictures to look at!

🙂

Yep, wood. From their site:

“Product Information
All of our stocks are 3 ply pressed poplar, we use poplar for its light weight and once it is coated it is very stable. The coating is epoxy bed liner with three initial coats a sand down to a smooth surface with no flaws. A final three coats are added to the stock with fine steel wool sand to final finish. The total dry time is four days minimum after final coats. ”

Damn-fine craftsmanship if you ask me.

The Ultima is wood? I thought it was a composite stock.
What is it coated with? Truck bed liner or something?
Thanks…………

Well, with it sitting proud that will make it easer to unscrew if you’ve got cold fingers and less likely to get stuck if you screw it in too far (done that a few times with building furniture lol)

Thanks!
When screwed in it sits about 3/8″ proud; basically acts as a rubber bumper on the bottom of the stock end. Be kinda cool to counter-sink it a bit but this way when I remove it there’s just a tiny hole there.
Now if only the UPS-fairy would bring me a real scope….

That’s really slick looking, does it tuck right into the stock or sit out?
