Q:

Magpul Polymer rails…..

Hi all,

I’ve noticed my R3s with alu rails under the but are leaving scratchmarks on certain surfaces if I’m not extremely careful……. ๐Ÿ™

Has anybody got any experience with the polymer rails (Magpul and friends), and would they be tough enough to attach a monopod to ????

Thanks…….

Trygve ๐Ÿ˜€

Right on! The edges will get rounded in short order. Among other flimsyness ..

When I first got them, they were too “plasticy” and light, and appeared to easily chip unlike the material a Glock is made of…with the feeling that they weren’t going to hold up like an aluminum rail with a little piece of rubber underneath to protect the finish on the stock. I later read in a paintball thread somewhere that a lot of guys were using them for there paintball and airsoft guns that had lighter and less expensive accessories. Then I read somewhere else in a powder burning forum that someone had a problem with the notches wearing and rounding after swapping out and moving his accessories around after time. I decided to send them back and go with the aluminum rails. I bought the poly ones by Magpul thinking I was going to be weight conscious. I decided a couple grams versus the heavy duty feeling of aluminum was worth the piece of mind of not having to fix something later was worth it.

Hey Trygve, Sir…I had those Poly Magpul rails, from Amazon.com, at first and sent them back. They were too “flim flam” for my Edgun and found that they are better suited for airsoft guns with “flim flam” bi-pods.

“Flim Flam” in what way. There are lots of “plastic” gun parts, or even guns (Glock) out there that stand up to heavy duty abuse. As long as the Polymer is the right material the “plastic” is very strong. Who knows if the Magpul ones are any different than all the other cheap ones floating around, but I got them from Amazon cuz it was convenient for me and they seem top notch. I prefer the polymer rail over the aluminum ones I have and don’t have any worries it will hold up with my bipod. If it fails i’ll be sure to let you guys know.

Iยดm with Hooked on this one. Polymer rails may be sturdy enough for a MONOpod though. Or not … Too flimsy for Bipods IMO.

I looked at the hardware store for something thin like gasket material but it was too thick and ended up taking an old bicycle inner tube and cut out a template just smaller than the mount. Once between the mount and the stock it gives a solid mount and no scratches.

I went with the L2 MOE on my Cricket and am impressed with it so far, though I have not put it under much stress.
Out of hundreds of reviews for them on Amazon the only negative reviews I saw were of them not fitting or some gripe like that, not on durability or failure.
