Mahogany grip foregrip w/ coco endcaps, Oiled 2/13 pics
Here is what i have so far. Pretty much done except for some final sanding and finishing. pieces shown with the set are what they will look like when finished with Tung oil. Quite a difference with the mahogany turns amber, nice color which inspired me to add the endcaps of cocobolo as welll as the grip insert. Let me know what you think. If your interested in this set PM me, i’ll be putting it up for sale as soon as the finish work is complete.

I know what you mean buddy, alot of work in a grip of any kind. Thing is Steve C. who does grips/ foregrips for our rigs has a duplicator and can run a set out in a day i bet. Sells a set for $180 or so, its a simple design, they look nice and i bet feel alot better then the factory grip. Thats not to say anything is wrong with his work, i like it and hes done some very nice stocks and grips. Its just he works from a duplicator, which you can’t compete with unless you have one as well.
We are doing one offs that take what, a week to do a grip?? I’d say a solid 40hrs on a grip, what do you think?? All by hand, never two alike, which is how i like it. We’re in a different league, but still have to compete in a reasonable price range. Thats why i said your better off selling over there as the l to $ conversion rate is almost cut in half. You can’t make a decent dollar when our economy is what it is right now.
No you can’t put a price on them, at least a reasonable one ๐ . When you spend that many hours shaping a piece of wood, you put some of yourself into it. Its hard to let it go for such a low figure. The average guy doesn’t really know what it takes to do what we do, nor the hours spent shaping, sanding, routing, chiseling the list goes on.
well mate for me i would be daft to sell for as little as $200 but as i say it,s hard to sell grips that have taken so long to make and work so they have a glass like finnish .true to my word i always say the big company,s ask to much that,s why i would never ask over the $300 mark but once again u have the shipping off the item,s god know,s lets c what i get offerd i,ve put them up for over the รยฃ100=$200 so lets c what i get offerd .i realy can,t put a price on them ๐ฅ
That comes out to $311 US which i think is high. For this set and say the other coco set $250-$275 tops is what i think i’d be able to get. $200-$225 for some of the lesser designs. I know you got more invested in wood being over there, that is your best market then. You can’t compete with the US market and earn what you put into it, our dollar is too weak right now. You can purchase cheap, which is a advantage, but can’t sell cheap. IDK, maybe someone would pay that much, the quality of coco you got almost looks laminated. Really nice cocobolo, and a sweet grip.
What would you sell with the set? We got the grip at say $175-$200 which we both know whats involved with that type of design. Now the foregrip pretty simple design, easy to inlett and round over, a days work, another $50. Are you going to include the buttstock? Where your losing is on the importing of the wood and paying shipping. Unless you come across a deal you can’t pass up ๐ .
well mate it,s time for me to sell my coco grips and i,m sure u will agree it,ll be a sin to c them gone .one thing mate what price would u put on such grips bareing in mind the wood here is alot dearer than there i put them on two ther forums for รยฃ160 but i think i might off over priced thenm for the market ๐
Thanks everyone, Buba b, i used the angles off the rails to try and pull the set into the frame. The Tung oil pulls alot of grain out of the Mahogany. I can see the camera barely picks it up, its there. I want to add some stippling to the grip fore grip but might wait till i have a coat or two on. I don’t want to bury any grain that i don’t have too. Cutting the wood on the angles i did brought out the rays in the wood, once i get a coat on i’ll post another set of pics.
V, am running short on mahog, nice wood to work with. Tools nicely, dust can irritate, has surprises in the grain, which will show when i oil the set. Hope i did your wood some justice.
Jim, thanks, thats about 1 yr. to date that i’ve been at this grip thing. I think i’m doing all right 8) .
Tried Tung and my linseed/spirits mix on each side of that piece and the tung won, hands down. I will hand sand in the first 3 or so coats, as many as it takes to seal the pores of the wood. Then another 1 or 2 as a topcoat. Will produce a semi shiney surface, it could be dulled with pummice stone. If someone wished it so.
Nice work ๐ฏ , think this is your best so far ๐ . Realy like the angles , gose along with the stealth look. The woods will come out a treat 8) .
Wholly Cow Nod you’ve turned into a woodworking machine!!!
NICE work yet again…
Jim.
Incredible!!!!!!
If’n you need more mahogany let me know.
Ya that would really bring out the grain. We’ll see how a few coats of tung oil will look before i bedliner it ๐ I’m betting on the tung oil though, and wet sanding it in to seal off the pores of the mahogany, lots of nice graining that can barely be seen just waiting for a little enhancement. Might want to keep it for myself. ๐
That will look great once you spray it with bedliner ๐
All the coco was a after thought, I agree a true inlay would look nice. But would have to be done while one had a sguare side to lay flat for the removal of material. I tried out the Tung oil on the blank piece and the Coco and thought they looked good together. So i’ve spent the last few days retro fitting coco onto the ends and spapeing the grip inserts. Above worked out well. I kinda like the beveled finger grooves. They’ll be finished sometime next week. Steve your works looking as good as mine. I do like the combination of woods. The insert was the last piece i thought to put in, i knew it would be tough to cut and fit.
nice one mate .next one,s u should try and do the inset a wee bit bigger and sand then into each other if u know what i meen .they would look so sweet like that .your grips r getting nicer as u go mate welldone ๐
That looks bad ass, can’t wait to see it mounted.
Wow, that is going to look great. I love the combo of mahogany and coco.
