Make A Wood Stock?
After seeing all these great looking stocks like the lemak stocks I want to give making my own a shot. This weekend I am going to put my CNC router to work and cut a Lemak inspired stock out for my condor. I have some nice extra dry 1″ thick maple boards on hand so I think I’ll route out two pieces and then glue and clamp them together to make a single 2″ thick profile. The only wood carving I know how to do is with the router so I will keep it fairly plain., ill add some fluting here and there and perhaps some checkering.
What kind of coatings are out there to black out and seal this stock? Is there some kind of rubberizer or epoxy based finsh that people use?

The butpad wll be on a pivet with a ball detent to keep it solid.

I didnt even read this thread for a while, because it seems everyone wants to try their hand at woodworking…and to be honest, most of the efforts turn into a labor of love… much like the ugly baby you see at the grocery store… only its mother loves it…and then only because she squeezed it out of her cooter.

I really liked the Lemat style (minus the batty-ness) so this was my interpretation of it. It took me more than a few runs to get the design right and feeling good.
Pab, I don’t intend to sell any stocks but If I have a chance next week I might be able cut you a blank so you can finish it yourself.
I am working on a one piece design that looks just like this but is, well, one piece. It also uses a machined AL seat and spine so it doesnt have to be so dang thick by the trigger. Ill start a new thread for that one. 🙂
I’m usually “:roll:” about home-made stocks, but that’s one helluva kick-ass peach… gotta say that it’s the absolute best that I’ve ever seen so far.

I forgot to post the finished pics of this stock. I had intentions to do some small ornamental work to it but have since started working on a new one piece design. I usually like the plain stuff anyway.

The butt is mounted on a spring loaded lock type mechanism. Simply pull the but away from the stock and turn it to remove the bottle.
Thanks all! I finally got around to finishing the 4 axis machining part and am now ready to sand it all down and do the fine stuff. I also finished the fore end and will be doing the finishing sanding on it to.
I bought a rifle buttpad that will mount onto the shoulder end of the stock. It will swivel to allow tank removal.
Once all the fine forming is done and I am ready to paint I will scan it with a 3D scaner and use those vector files to generate my gcode, that way I can bypass most of the teadious fine finishing work and do the entire forming process with a single machine. Then I’ll be able to pop these babies out 🙂

I’ve been working on this stock design for awhile. It took some time for me to get my brain around 4 axis machining. I finally got the thing finalized and modeled in AutoCad. I must have cut 5 or 6 stocks before I settled on the design. I should have it finished this week!

Here is a video of my machine doing some the pocketing of the stock. After the pocketing is done the stock itself is cut out. My next step is hooking up the 4th axis and getting the stock blank’s curves and contours roughed out, then manually sanded and finsihed. After that I put the thing in a jig and do the checkering and fine engraving detail, then put finish on it and she’ll be done 🙂 🙂
