Making a Talon quieter?
I just ordered a Stubby HiFlo from Randy at R&L. I went ahead and got the shroud but was wondering if anyone has had any luck quieting down the Talon with just modifying the shroud, etc.

Knowing this, I suspect you will have no trouble with adjusting the Stubby to where you have almost no noise, if you do a simple mod. Remember the Stubby only has about 1 1/2 inch of frame left after the front barrel baffle is installed. You absolutely must drill that baffle and let that air go back into the six inches of hollow frame behind it.
Let us know how this works out for you. I’m trying some things myself on my Stubby without suffering a drastic increase in OAL. It is so perfectly balanced now that I hate to tamper with it by having something stick out too far from the frame.
It is a sweet rifle and I intend to keep this one forever.

Yep, those special rifles are out there. I’ve sold a few and regret it.
I will keep y’all posted on the Stubby mod. I’m thinking about getting a long .25 barrel and have it threaded. I’ll talk to my machinist and see what he thinks about drilling out the baffle.

I was surprised how much effect that power wheel has on hammer impact. If you turn it down to “0/0” I’m not sure the gun would even fire.

If you want to plink you can fill with a lower pressure and shoot lighter pellets with a lower PW setting. The gun has legs out to 25-30 yards and is fun to shoot when it’s that quiet.
Yeah, that’s kinda what I’m hoping for.
Case in point, this morning I was at the FT range sighting in my HW97. It’s currently running CPLs at 9.5 fpe at the muzzle but that was enough to drop an English Sparrow that happened to land on the 45 yard line marker. I would guess about 6 fpe or less on the target.
So if I can turn down the Talon HiFlo to under 20fpe, it’ll probably be quiet enough. But I have the shroud extension too if needed.
My TSS has a couple of spring and fender washer combos – something that helps is putting rubber fender washers facing the muzzle. It seems to help absorb the sound a little.

Yeah, I figured it would be tight but it’ll be fun to experiment with. Quiet “enough” is relative so I’m hoping that by adjusting the power down some and playing with the space given, I can find something acceptable.
I did pick up a shroud but it was the shorter version. I forget what length he told me but Randy told me that it would be effective for a HiFlo valve in .22. The overall length with shroud will be 32.5″.
With the Stubby you get the Talon frame, not the Talon SS which is several inches longer.
The Talon frame’s front barrel bushing is only about 1 1/2″ from the end cap. Behind that is about 6″ of empty frame you can use by drilling holes in the front barrel baffle, and possibly venting the frame behind the front barrel baffle.
This will help, but don’t expect miracles. Even using the longer Talon SS frame with springs and washers for baffles, vents and such, it will reduce the noise by perhaps half. The standard Talon will do much less.
The best option is to get a moderator that is 6.5″ or longer. Then you can get down to whisper quiet.
The key to a quiet moderator is large volume and effective baffles to slow the release of the discharged air per shot.

Either Marmot_Militia, or Randy can supply the .25 barrels. The only difference is Randy is currently using the standard 12″ 18″ and 24″ LW barrels supplied by AF.
Jim can cut the barrels to the length you desire. Personally, I kind of like a 16″ barrel for weight and balance. Four inches in length make a large difference in a Stubby.
