Managed some 55 and 100 yard groups using kodiaks today
Right guys, managed to go out again to do some long range shooting that was pleased with my results.
The gun:
Gunpower stealth modified
Ported and polished
Shooting kodiaks at an average of 800 fps with a high of 830 and a low of 785 over 20 shots.
Still using my 12″ barrel but this time the bushing grub screws were tight 😛
These are some 55 yard groups with a .223 cartridge for scale.
This group was 1.67″ c-t-c
This group was 2.825″ c-t-c
This group was 2.5″ c-t-c
And the last and best group was 1.25″ c-t-c
Then I stretched it out to 100 yards and got this group at 4.5″ The far bottom hole wasnt part of the group, that was from my brothers .223
Cant wait till I get this 18″ barrel
Oh and I now have found that I need a bigger scope. I have a 3-9×40 at the moment and even at 55 yards, the crosshairs cover the dot so I think I could shrink those 55 yard groups to atleast under an inch.
Might look at something like 6-24×44

I am lucky that I have the range and I see that many of you can only shoot in your back yard or at a local range. Staying on my land, about 10 acres I have about 150 yards to play with but could extend that to over 800 yards if I shoot onto my neighbours field which I do have permission to shoot onto.

I have 100yds on my place with 200yds available next doot so I
understand the need to stretch it out….
I think 15.9gr would be 950’s and 18.1gr would be 910 or so…. Pretty
much a perfect speed for those pellets…. You may be able to shorten the
spacer behing your spring and reduce the speed and increase your shot
count… Would also allow you to increase your tophat to ensure it is not
hitting the valve… There are so many things to experiment with, it will
keep you busy….. I found that polishing the bore with fine valve grinding
paste then auto paint compound works well to increase accuracy and
allow the gun to shoot different pellets….. Might get really brave and
polish the crown too… BUT, just shoot it and enjoy for a while to get
familiar with the gun. There will be plenty time for fine tuning…
That gives me some confidence, I only have about 200 kodiaks left so some JSB’s will be next, 15 grain or 18 grain when im pushing the 21 grian kodiads at 800 with 12″ and approx 900 with 18″?

Nice groups Dave… I never had good results with Kodiaks.. I switched to
JSB 15.9gr and my groups tightened up dramatically…. It is great that
you have the room to stretch it out… You can really see what is going on
at that range…. Great post…
Im not at home at the monent but should be able to put up a string when I get home.
From memory it was a shot to shot average of approx 10 fps
Seems okay to me.
I have my tophat at 0.068″ and am not sure if it is hitting the tank causing vibrations. If I lengthen the tophat distance I get more power but use a huge amount of air. Iv using the standard talon hammer and spring

I hunt at x10 as my tiny brain can’t remember my hold over for mutiple magnifications. So I always stay at that mag’ when I’m shooting paper.

If ya double the mag you can double the holdover…. 😯
Yeah you need to get some JSBs(15.9g and 18.1g for your rifles power). At ranges of 75+yards the JSBs have always been the best pellet for me. You will probably need to do some testing to see what velocity your rifle likes best.
What is your shot to shot consistancy? I see that your extreme spread is 45 fps but what is the spread for 5 shots?
Like Pab said you don’t need a high mag. scope to shoot good groups either. I have shot several MOA groups at 75 and 100yards using a 9x scope. Your target just needs to be the right size. For example if I try to use a .5 inch dot at 100 yards as my aim point the crosshair will completly cover the dot but if I use a 1 inch dot I can see some of the dot on both sides of the crosshair. You don’t want to go to big either like a softball or basketball size bullseye.
How do you get your JSB’s, ive never seen them in any of the local gun shops. Might have to check out the old Fleabay to get them.
The 18″ barrel im getting is from a .22 Parker Hale dragon that was a full power single stroke pneumatic. From what I can find on the net, they were very accurate and the factory in Birmingham produced only 200 FT dedicated rifles and 2000 .22 sporting rifles. Im sure I read that they used BSA barrels.
My shot string from a 3000 psi fill starts at approx 800, then rises to a max of 830 and falls to 785 over 20 shots.
Im estimating an average of 900 with the 18″ barrel and am pondering weather to tune it down to 800 for more shots and hopfully better consistancy or keep it at 900 for better power.
Hmm….. Looks like I might need a new valve for better flow.

Try the JSBs as well, they are incredibly good in my BSA barrel. I should think the LW would like them too.

Thanks, im going to buy a guntuff 6-24×44 when I have a little bit more cash, should make the gun look a bit more suitable for longer ranges

Yeah, a 3×9 doesn’t do much for trying to send tight groups downrange at 100 yards. You’ll tighten those groups up for sure with better glass.

Looks like first a tin of the 18.1 grains will be coming my way after i buy a new scope which should hopefully be this weekend and will sell my old scope for a pellet fund 😀
I hope this Parker Hale barrel like the pellets I feed it
