Q:

Marks in the bore?

My cousin has a AR-15 which he occasionally shoots, but mostly keeps it for the “Just in case” scenario as a defense rifle. I was shooting it this weekend, just at some cans 30yds out, nothing long range, but it wasn’t shooting up to par at all.
So, I stripped it down, took a peek at the barrel and discovered three lengthwise “skid” marks in the bore, going from the chamber to about 1/2 of the way to the muzzle. Now this gun was bought used, and is an older model (A2 serial no. in the 8000s), but is in good external condition and has been shot very little. What is up with this and how did it get in the bore?

I think it’s time to replace that barrel. Just for Good ol piece of mind 😀

Yep, I agree. Get it back to Mil-Spec (or better) and have one less thing to worry about.

Do they start at the gas transfer port? I have heard of serious leading at these locations, which would be straight…

Most production barrels are hammer forged, meaning they are literally hammered around a die that imprints the rifling and establishes the final bore size. Machining marks would seem out of the question, since no “machining” of the bore takes place. Also the side of a cleaning rod would leave a rather wide mark, when looking down the bore. Not saying that’s the answer though. Shouldn’t be too hard to find a new barrel if that ones shot, theres a million of them out there. They also make great replacement uppers, even saw a FN five seven upper conversion for the AR 15 the other day. That would be a fun gun. Top mount clip fed like the PS2000. 😯 Almost $700 though. 😯

LLama, your idea sounds feasible, but the marks are much, much wider than simple scratches and are perfectly straight. Maybe machining marks?

If I had to guess, I’d say someone had a three piece cleaning rod that was bent. When it was a little hard to push, instead of checking it, they shoved harder and dug the rod into the barrel.

For those of you that use a screw together rod, I suggests wrapping the seams in tape or something of the sort so if it bends around it has a much lower chance of scratching anything.

But yeah, that (or something along those lines) is what I would guess happened. Unfortunately the only thing he can do is go get another barrel. Although if it’s just a home protection gun, minute of torso accuracy is usually good enough.

sorry about that I wen’t to my profile and removed the avatar but guess it didn’t take effect I didn’t intend on taking that much space I had intended on learning as much as I could from all the great post here, kind of sitting in the weeds for awhile . But guess that did not work so well with the huge avatar. Dave T

I’ve sent him a PM a while ago welcoming him and asking if he can fix it.

Select Resize Photos in Photobucket and “replace photo” when done.

Make it no more than 150×150 pixels

You need to resize your avatar. 😀

if it is the original barrel low number it is not chrome lined 4 Dijet # are sought after guns it should have the chrome bolt carrier these barrels were notorious for getting bent if it had the bayonet on it some where 222 cal also, you could get a straightness gauge to check it sarco sells them I think they are about 10.00 or so just make sure it is new have you checked the headspace also brownells might have the items

Can’t see how it would happen from normal firing. Shouldn’t be staight. Wrong size cleaning rod or bad jag scratching the hell out of the bore? Must be damage from cleaning, unless someone was firing some undersized projectile bouncing it straight down the barrel. Got me. Would like to know if ya figure it out.
