Matador HST fix
Hello EDgun fans . As many of you already know there is one thing I hate on a matador…the HST. Every time I get the HST perfect it seems to always loosen the locking collar and release spring tension. Matadors have a little thread next to the HST and once I asked Ed what that was for. He told me that Russia has a draconian law about foot pounds and it was meant to lock the gun from increasing the power.
Well that little thread also locks the HST as a secondary locking feature. The HST won’t move if you put a set screw in the hole. No more moving !

Yes, it works. On the older models, that screw was used to lock the HST from moving. I believe Ed still uses that female thread for Russia in order to be compliant with the 3-joule law.
Here is a Gen 1 R3 (steel breech) with the original HST and locking screw. Ed later added a locking collar so that the gun could be adjusted without tools. I personally think he should have dimpled the end of the collar.

Here is a photo from a typical autoloading shotgun, in this case, a Benelli. The notches on the end cap lock with the peg on the forarm so the lug cannot vibrate loose:

Did this fix actually work?
I get some great strings like 4-7 fps ES, Then the next string is 13 fps ES. Average speed around 903 fps.
Then after like 300 shots average speed goes down to 901, then 200 shots later, 898 fps average speed. Seems the HST backs itself ever so slightly….
Just wanted to know what ES others were getting on a .22 R3M after locking HST with this set screw.
Also what would be considered a decent ES? And where are the common places to check to tighten up ES.

Weed whacker line is a good idea and It will probably work fine. But if not M3 x 4mm might work for you.
The weed whacker string idea is great, maybe I’ll melt one on the tip of the grub screw as I couldn’t find a nylon one that small.

If it were me, I would use a Nylon tip grub screw for that application. Locking something down forever is one thing. However if you want to revisit the adjustment this would be a better option.

Place a piece of lead and then that grub screw. It will protect the thread.
Is there enough room for a slice of weed wacker line between the set screw and the threads of the HST??? They make nylon tipped set screws, but I am not sure if you can get them in 3mm….
My Dad’s .30 gen 2 R3 was purchased used and when I tore it apart it had this set screw in place. I thought it came from the factory, but since he is not the original owner I cannot be sure. I have never had to mess with the HST on my R3M .25, but I will look next time to see if it has a set screw in it from the factory.
I suppose it could damage the threads but I am still keeping the collar tight and the HST does not move with the set screw in place. I think as long as you don’t over tighten the set screw and you remember to loosen it before adjustment I would say go for it.
Thanks once again for the helpful suggestion. I have been using a o-ring between the gun and the collar and that seems to be working fine. Using the set screw always made me nervous because I thought it could damage the threads. Is there any chance of that happening?

What works good also is a harder O-ring in between the lock nut a Buna-N 90 I believe and with a smaller ID size, but can’t recall the size I’m using.
