Q:

Matador R3M English manual.

Dear friends,

I am about to order the new English passports for Matador R3M. As English is not my native language I doubted that I’ve made a proper translation. Thanks to Ted (Holdover) and Tedd (Oldgoat) I have my translation edited and ready to be printed. But I thought one thing — both Ted and Tedd are professionals in PCP air guns and Matadors so there are many things they know and don’t need to be explained. On the other hand there are many people no so familiar with air guns and I expect there could be some kind of misunderstanding while reading the manual. So I decided to show the draft of manual here for you to read it carefully and advice me with items I should explain more carefully and add something I missed. Misspelling corrections are welcome as well!

The bolded text is for Russian designer to know what picture to put at that part of the text, don’t pay attention to it.

I appreciate your help and thanks in advance!

With the best regards

Ed

1. Introduction

You should carefully read this manual before using this gun. This manual will lead you through the general technical specifications of the gun, the way to prepare it to shoot and the rules of using the gun.

2. Information about the gun.

The ”Matador” is made according to TU 7184-001-75734642-2005 (technical standard of EDgun company, developed and authorized by EDgun company and the technical controlling authorities of Russian Federation) and adapted to be produced out of Russia under control of EDgun company.

3. General description.

The Matador is designed for plinking, target shooting and hunting using lead pellets for airguns. The barrels are made by Lothar Walther, Germany, according to the specifications and drawings issued by the EDgun company and designed for using lead pellets made by the JSB Diabolo company, Czech Republic. Using other pellets may cause inferior accuracy results and EDgun company cannot guaranty the accuracy result with other pellets. The guns are set to the energy limit valid in the country they are sold in or without limits if sold in a country that has no energy limits for airguns. The EDgun company doesn’t carry any obligations to meet the standards or limitations of the energy, caliber or design level in case a client didn’t inform the EDgun company about such restrictions or if he changes the energy of the gun himself.

The use of the gun should be done under conditions providing safe shooting and in the temperature range from minus 10 degrees up to plus 30 degrees Centigrade (from 15 degrees Fahrenheit up to 85 degrees Fahrenheit).

4. Technical data:

5. Security notes

Airguns can be dangerous! Improper use of this airgun could lead to serious injury or death. Please follow all safety rules when shooting. Strictly follow the requirements of this manual in items of “The way of use” and “Technical maintenance”.

It is strictly prohibited while using the gun!

• To aim the gun towards people, animals and other targets you are not willing to shoot.

• To disassemble the loaded gun or the reservoir under pressure.

• To overfill the maximum pressure of the reservoir.

• To use pellets which are not designed for use in airguns as well as other objects not designed for use as pellets for shooting from airguns. Avoid using pellets having plastic, hard iron or other components rather than lead.

6. Before use.

Remove the protecting lubrication from the external parts of the gun. Use cleaners, cotton cloth and lubricants that are designed for use with airguns. Do not use the aggressive cleaning liquids and solvents.

Fill the gun with air (see chapter 7)

ATTENTION! It is strictly prohibited to overfill the gun to more than 220 bars!

Check for proper functioning of the bolt and trigger. Pull the handle of the bolt up and move it backward to the end. While cocking the hammer you will feel the resistance of the hammer spring. When the end of the rearward movement the bolt is reached, it should remain open – that means that the hammer is cocked.

Put a magazine with pellets into the slot in the breech. Locate the magazine with the teeth facing towards the rear of the gun. The magazine is fixed by means of two spring loaded balls, installed to the magazine, which are to be located in the holes in the magazine loading port. Revolve the magazine counterclockwise for one or two clicks to be sure that it fixed properly. (фото № 2 паза в рамке), (фото № 3 барабана).

Close the bolt by moving it forward and them rotate the handle clockwise (down) to the end of its travel. (фото № 1).

The gun is now ready to shoot.

ATTENTION! Even if you are sure that there is no pellet in the gun, always treat the Matador as if it is loaded and cocked! Never point the gun at people, animals or other objects that you don’t intend to shoot.

7. Readying the Matador for shooting.

To fill the gun with the air you should insert the fill probe to the fill port of the gun (you can fill the gun by using either a hand pump or tank). (фото № 4 штуцера вставленного в заправочный порт).

Be sure that O-rings on the fill probe have a thin film of silicone grease on them and are not damaged (фото № 5 штуцера с резинкам) When you put the air into the fill hose those O-rings will “float up” and seal the fill port. The fill hose pressure will raise and once having reached the level of the pressure inside the gun’s reservoir, the fill valve, located in the reservoir end cap, opens. The compressed air then can enter the reservoir.

While filling the Matador, the raising air pressure should be closely monitored using the pressure gauge located in the end of the reservoir. Once the reservoir is full, make sure that the air pressure has been released in the fill hose before removing the fill probe.(фото № 6 манометра в торце резервуара).

To load the gun, pull the bolt back to the end, cocking the hammer. The bolt will remain in the back position. Insert the magazine in the slot at the breech. Locate the magazine with the cogs facing to the rear of the gun. Then close the bolt. When you close the bolt with magazine full of pellets, a pellet is loaded to the barrel.

While cocking the bolt for the next shot, make sure that the bolt is rotated fully counter clockwise before pulling it rearwards. If the bolt is not fully rotated counter clockwise, the magazine will not fully cycle and, when the bolt is pushed back forward, the pellet could become damaged and the magazine could become jammed.

Uncocking a loaded Matador:

1. Pull down the lever at the left side of the breach. (фото № 7 рычага отключения переводчика барабана)

2. Pull the handle of the bolt up and move the bolt backward to the end.

3. Hold the handle back with one hand and pull the trigger with a finger of your other hand. You will feel the hammer moving forward, pushing the bolt forward as well. Ease the bolt forward and rotate it down. There is still a pellet in the barrel but: the hammer is uncocked and the gun is now safe.

4. To shoot you need to pull up the handle, move the bolt backward, cocking the hammer and return the bolt to the front position. The gun is now cocked and ready to shoot. The lever is still switched off. If you plan to go on shooting you should pull the lever up to switch the magazine drive back on. If you didn’t follow step # 1 by not switching the magazine drive off, you will have another pellet loaded into the barrel. Please be careful!

ATTENTION! When filling the Matador, the maximum fill pressure can be exceeded by 10 % more than recommended. As the air pressure raises in the reservoir, the air heats up. The reservoir will also heat up. As the air and the reservoir cool off, the pressure will drop to the 220 bar max fill pressure.

The Matador is now ready to shoot down to 120 bar by simply changing magazines as needed.

8. Disassembling the gun.

ATTENTION! Before dissassembling the gun be sure it is not loaded with a pellet. Cock the gun, remove the magazine and shoot at a target to be sure you don’t have a pellet in the barrel.

To work on the gun you will need metric hex keys, 1.3 mm, 2 mm, 2.5 mm, 4 mm to unscrew the screws, screwdriver, rags, light hammer, knockout bar diameter 2.9 mm and common sense to understand what you do.

1. Unscrew the trigger guard bolt holds the gun to the stock.

2. Take the stock off the gun.

You have the gun taken off the stock. (фото № 8 винта крепления скобы)

To clean the barrel you should do the following:

1. Cock the gun, moving the bolt backward to the end.

2. Take off the magazine.

3. Shoot into a pellet trap to be sure there is no pellet in the barrel.

4. Cock the gun.

5. With a 2.5 mm hex key, remove the 2 screws in the rear breech block. (фото № 9 двух винтов рамки)

6. With a 2.5 mm hex key, loosen the 2 screws in the front breech block one turn. (фото № 10 двух винтов казенника)

7. Move the breech slightly side to side while pulling it rearward. Remove it from the gun. Hold the exposed hammer with a finger and pull the trigger. Ease the hammer forward. (фото № 11 полуснятой рамки)

8. Unscrew the front moderator air tube. (фото № 12 полуснятого кожуха)

9. You now have access to the barrel. You should clean the barrel ONLY from the breech side. A bore snake or cleaning rod can be used. Do not damage the barrel by using steel bristle brushes! Use only brass brushes and cotton patches. Be careful with the crown; don’t damage it while cleaning the barrel. You can use the oils and solvents that are designed for firearm barrel cleaning. Once the barrel is clean, it is normal for the Matador to need 30-50 shots to “season” the barrel and have the maximum accuracy restored.

10. Assembly is the reverse of disassembly. Before putting the breech back on the gun, cock the hammer with your hand.

9. Trigger adjustment.

The trigger can be adjusted to the owner’s liking. At the factory, the trigger is adjusted to the middle position. The small screw, behind the trigger blade is the adjustment screw. Turning it clockwise will reduce the length of the trigger movement and can achieve quite short and light pull at the trigger. Do not adjust it to a too light condition. If turned to a too light condition, the gun could fire if bumped. Please be careful! Turning the adjuster counterclockwise you will give a longer pull with a heavier trigger letoff. (фото № 13 винтика регулировки на СК).

10. Maintenance

If the guidelines of this manual are followed, a Matador owner should enjoy many years of trouble free use. You shouldn’t disassemble the gun without necessary reasons.

The Matador is a solid and reliable gun so the maintenance is quite simple:

From time to time clean the barrel with the special cleaning tools and materials.

O-rings should be lubricated slightly with silicone lubrication.

Take care to avoid getting dirt into the fill port.

After using the gun you should wipe the metal parts of the gun with the neutral gun oil and then clean it dry with a clean cloth. Do not allow oil to touch the wooden parts of the gun.

From time to time, check the tightness of the screws.

Keep the gun full of air when not in use. If the gun is not used on a regular basis, to avoid regulator problems, take a few shots each week.

11. Information about factory test.

The Matador is made according to technical conditions 71 8240-75734642-2005. It was tested for proper functioning and shot for accuracy .

The gun is ready to be used.

Hey Ed, I can think of 2 things that would be nice..

This is really important note and i believe it should be mentioned in the manual, Mr. Eduard, please don’t forget about this.

Hey Ed, I can think of 2 things that would be nice..

1) A picture block diagram, not sure what its called..but it would help some
like this…http://www.shoeboxcompressor.com/images/stories/shoeboxexplodedview2.jpg

2) A list of all o-ring sizes..I think its on this board

I read on this forum that Dry Firing the rifle could damage the hammer assembly (if i remember correctly).

If that is correct, I would consider adding a warning to not Dry Fire the rifle.

Also, under the technical specs, could you consider adding barrel thread pitch?

thanks
lars

Of course the will be pictures.

As for the pressure — thank for noticing!

Ed

Ed, this may or not be of interest, but reading your manual which I think is great, I spotted these two issues. Not an issue to those that are familiar to Edgun but to a newbie maybe. See what you think.

1.) The use of the gun should be done under conditions providing safe shooting and in the temperature range from minus 10 degrees up to plus 30 degrees Centigrade (from 15 degrees Fahrenheit up to 85 degrees Fahrenheit).

Many here in the states will be using the Edgun in temperatures in and about the 100 degrees Fahrenheit during summer months and after reading your above excerpt one may shy away from buying an Edgun if they are lead to believe it’s unsafe to use in 100 degree wheather.

Second issue I see is a little conflict in statements as to minimum working pressures. See below in your statements:
4. Technical data:
– Working pressure, bar 130-220
– The Matador is now ready to shoot down to 120 bar by simply changing magazines as needed.

Here you have stated that the minimum working pressure is 130 bar under Technical Data then further down the page the instructions state that the Matador is now ready to shoot down to 120 bar. This may be confusing to a new consumer.
As I mentioned no big deal but someone new to Edgun may have questions

Edgun all the way!

1 – stock
2 – bolt handle
3 – breech
4 – front breech
5 – upper shell
6 – moderator
7 – gauge
8 – filling port
9 – trigger guard
10 – trigger

Maybe add a picture of the gun with these numbered on it.

if you wanted an English translation why did you ask two Americans 😀 😀 😀

All clean air is breathable – and even the smog-filled although it’s not good for your lungs. 😉

Sent from my iPhone that my dumbass employer forced on me. Long live the Android !

What about using hand pumps? The air from the them is not breathable 🙂

Hi Ed,

In the “Attention” part at the beginning, we might add that “Compressed Air” be further defined as “high quality breathable compressed air” to differentiate the normal compressed air from one that performs well on the Edgun regulator and valve.

Just remembering a few things when I was new in the world of pcp. The English manual seems very well written at this point.

You have a valid point there 🙂

quote Ed:

If we talk about those who is not familiar with PCP airguns and high pressure reservoirs giving them detailed instruction to de-gas the reservoir would look as an invitation to do it 🙂 which I wouldn’t like to do. The high pressure is quite dangerous, you are absolutely right, but showing them the way to disassemble reservoir I would carry the responsibility for it if they do something wrong (you will never be able to control it) and it’d cause the drama. Having not have that in the manual I mean the only thing “If you do disassembling of the high pressure reservoir — you will do it on your own risk. If you are not sure about yourself — ask those who can do it!”.

There are a few places that mentioned not to fill the gun above a certain level or that it should not be worked on with the reservoir under pressure. Is there still room to put instructions on how to properly de-gas it? I’ve seen videos on Ted’s youtube channel on how to do it but as a new PCP user and had I not come to his page, I would not know how to do it. Some other guns come with a de-gassing tool and probably explain how to use it in their manual.

I am just thinking of this because recently a forum member de-gassed his gun until the gauge showed 0 pressure however, when he unscrewed the tube it blew up. Other than pointing a gun at a target that you do not intend to kill, I think this is the second most dangerous part of PCP.

Dear Ed, dear all,

The manual is brilliant….!

However, – may be a good idea to add something about daily maintenance of the walnut stock ???

Also under point 7 I would have replaced the word “readying” with “preparing”……….

Just my two cents………

Cheers
Trygve in Oslo 😀
