Q:

Matator r3 22 and .25

Ok in the next month or two I will have the funds to purchase an edgun probably the one time in the next 18 years…kid on the way… So with that said I am lookin at .22 standard and possibly also a .25… After reading the comparisons of the kricket along with recent reviews I know want an edgun and not a kricket and a r3 and nkt a R3m at that what can I realistically expect factory set up for shot count in each velocitys etc. will tinkering be necessary? I have never had a regulated gun and honestly it’s above my level… Input from all y’all that own these guns would be greatly appreciated.

That is exactly why I shoot Predators in my R3 Standard .25. I don’t shoot much over 100 yards with them but they are destructive on small pests under 100 yards and very destructive on smaller stuff under 50 yards. Accuracy rivals the latest Kings.

quote oldgoat:

The 25 just passes thru and keeps on going, using the 25 at close range, the pigeons will sometimes fly off a little bit before dropping.

Dear Oldgoat;

your post is really informative and useful, thanks for nice advises.

Norman, you will get around 70 regulated shots with a 22 standard, the 25 standard will give you 45-50 regulated shots when both are set at 880-890 fps.

I have a R2.5 22 standard and a R3 25 standard and my stated regulated shot count for both of them is what I am currently getting.

The 25 is at least as accurate as the 22 and the 25 has a higher BC so, the pellets will drop less and the 25s are less affected by any side winds.

I have one 22 cal Matador left and it is spoken for, after that one is sold, I am done with the 22 cal Matadors. The 25 cal is far better overall for my usage.

I have noticed that the 22 produces more dead right there shots on pigeons that are shot under 50 yards. The lighter 22 cal pellet expends more of its energy in the pigeon. The 25 just passes thru and keeps on going, using the 25 at close range, the pigeons will sometimes fly off a little bit before dropping.

After 50 yards, there is no comparison; the 25 is far superior! If you are going to use the Matador just to shoot targets, the 22 is as accurate as the 25 and the 22 cal pellets are a lot cheaper that the 25 cal pellets.

If you want to do some pesting with your Matador, the thump/whack that you can hear when the 25 cal pellet hits a pigeon or ground squirrel at 100 plus yards is easily worth the increased cost of the 25 cal JSBs!

My R3 25 cal standard is really sweet and it is my “truck gun”! It is so easy to poke it out of the window when I see something that really needs shot while I am cruising around out in the country.

If I could only own one Matador, I would keep my R3 25 long. That might change when my R3 30 Matador long finally arrives!

Norman, I agree with you; I am also not interested in the R3Ms. The airguns that I have owned that came with a magazine all shot better 100 yard groups when they were fitted with a single shot loading tray.

Don’t worry about tinkering with your Edgun, just buy one! They are built like a Russian tank and they are very easy to work on/tinker with. Ed designed them that way! I warn people to be wary about getting anal with adjusting the Matadors! It can easily happen!

If you buy a Matador, this forum has more info on Edguns than any forum that I have seen. Here, you have more info and help than you will find for any other airgun: anywhere!

Time for some Edgun Kool Aid and bed! 😆

There´s no tinkering needed if you don´t want to. You can expect at least 55 regulated shots but most likely around 60. Mine shot around 60 shots at 930 fps as delivered in stock form. Both of them although i bought the Nr II from an English guy who had it taken down to 12 ftlbs to clear those restrictive UK laws but when i set the reg at it´s std setting it shot the same as the first one +- 60/+- 930 ftps.
