Maybe one step closer.
This morning I was doing some more thinking/drawing on my regulator. The design is there, but it all comes down to the spring. So I rang a few companies, finally got to talk with somebody who knew his stuff. I gave him the requirements, a 10mm OD in as short a space as possible, to fully compress at 2000psi. He did some calculations and came back with 18″ length. 😯 😆
After we finished laughing he said it sounded like a die-spring might do the job and gave me a number. No luck there but got another number, beginning to think the idea was dead.
Disc springs! When the chap reeled off some specs I nearly fell off my chair. 9mm OD, deflects (suddenly) at over 1000nm, and then deflects back when the pressure comes off. Each one requires approx 3mm, so one, two or three are going to fit in a space no longer than 9mm x 10mm. Some space behind them for a spring to absorb the backlash when the pressure comes off, space in front for the piston…25mm tops? The bottle is around 300mm long, so the regulator can be easily 250mm long (x 16mm wide). It’s all looking very doable.
I’m being sent some samples so hopefully once the lathe is up and running and I’ve got the hang of it I’ll be able to start working on this project. 😀

He is the ONLY one to design and build a functional operating regulator.
We all hope he is doing well with that project as IIRC he is attempting to get it commercially produced. He is in a confidentiality agreement with the buying company.
Good luck making a better one as McMike’s has the design down pat.

I’ve yet to understand why McMike’s is so incredibly complicated, unless making it adjustable is the reason?
I’m after a good consistent fps. Adjustability can come via the hammer or tophat.
McMike’s is the M16 of regulators; I’m hoping mine will be the AK47. 😀
I guess you will find out on your own when you start making parts to high precision with fit and finish to function well.

That won’t be the hard part, it’s the sucking & seeing method of testing that’s going to require the most effort.
