Millet TRS-1 4×16

I purchased the Millet TRS-1 after quite a bit of research. I bought mine from Midway and paid a little over $300.00 to get it to my gate.

I wanted to stay in the price range of $300.00 and have the following features, 30 MM, lighted mil dot reticle, bottom range of 3 or 4 power, side focus that focuses at air gun ranges and target knobs that could be set to zero.

This put Hawk in the running and a lot of other cheaper Chinese scopes and of course a few Russian models. I read a few negative things about the Hawke and did not trust the cheaper brands like Leapers, I would have liked a Bushnell, however they could not offer these features for the $300.00 limit, or so I thought, more on that later, so I went with the Millet.

The scope is big as what is expected for a 4×16 30mm, it has fairly good optics, it is clear from edge to edge, the lighted reticle is nice and has good range on birghtness, however I have not used it yet for night shooting, so I can’t really say how useful that feature is for me yet.

The reticle has mildots and it has half mildot slach marks also, a feature I find very useful. The mildot is set for 16 power. It also has a detent in the power ring for 10 power, I have no idea why, if the mildots were set for 10 power I could understand why, but the are not. The power range marks can be seen from prone, which is a nice feature.

It is easy to adjust for parallex and goes down to about 30 feet which is okay for me, the parallex knobs read 10 25 50 100 200 500 and infintity, this may not work for those who like to use the paralex as a range finder.

It came with a sunshade and flip up end caps.

The Target knobs are nice, with positive clicks and are 1/4 minute. I used to always send my scopes back to Leupold to get this done after the fact, so it was nice to start off with them, but the leupolds had no clicks.

One trouble is tho that with an airgun you have to dial so much elevation in, and the knobs do not really have anything to help you keep track of how many times you have turned that turrent completely around.

Then I tried to reset the knobs to zero. I looked up the instructions on the internet, it did not come with instructions, and found on the TRS-1 ,I had to loosen only one screw instead of three as on the TRS-2 model, a later generation and improved model which I have only seen in non variable 10 power.

I loosened the screw and found the knobs would not move. The screw was a tiny little flat bladed screw, I turned it until it came out and still the knobs would not move and then I found I could not get the screw back in.

Time to call the factory.

I dialed the number provided, and a girl from Busnell answered the phone. I told her my problem and asked if Bushnell had purchased Millet and she saaid they had bought Millet out. That was a News Flash for me. She connected me with the technical department where I explained my problem. That is where I found out you can’t adjust the knobs to zero.

So far I have used the scope only on my Talon, it is not springer rated, and I have no plans to use it on one.

It rains a lot here, I have closed the scope caps and put the gun away with water inside the lid on the caps to see if it leaks internally, so far it seems to be sealed tightly.

My only other air gun scope is a 3×12 Baraska, and to compare the two is not fair, the Millet cost 6 times as much. Sufice it to say the Millet out performs the Baraska on all levels with great vigor.

I do not like the fact that I can’t zero the target knobs, but quite frankly, I shoot so many different pellets, and trade back and forth from the talon tank to the condor tank that at this stage of the of the game, I would have stripped out any allen head screws by now on the target knobs. The little flat bladed screw would have lasted as long as a fart in a wind storm for that task, I always had trouble with the leupold knob screws stripping. Other than that problem I like the scope.

I guess the advice here is to wait for the TRS-2 in 4×16 so you can get the adjustable turrent knobs.

And it appears you are buying a Bushnell, sort of….
