mini 14
i was thinking of getting a mini 14 in .223 what do you guys think of them. i do not reload so .223 appeals to me as rounds are cheap and easy to get. i know it will never be long range but how is accuracy. i have a ruger 9mm and a .22 target handgun and love them both.

Mini 14 is the poor mans AR. I have both and theres no comparsion. I saw a DPMS basic AR for $895 at the store today.
I have one..will never have another one..I just bought a new DPMS 223 and it is like comparing apples to oranges..but…the ruger is alot more sloppy in the action and will shoot some reloads I messed up where the DPMS jams after 4-5 shots from powder fouling.. 😉
One of the most inherently inaccurate semiautos made. A waste of money in my opinion. Theres lots of aftermarket support to bolt goodies on em, and they look pretty cool, but if ya can’t hit what your aiming at might as well buy a louisville slugger with a red dot sight. Bushmaster, DPMS, Remington R-15 which is made by bushmaster, just to name a few, all will outshoot a mini 14 any day. Don’t waste your money.
as SteveLA says, once m1a theres no going back…i so want one, and thats where my money is going once i have enough !
but wife promised me a a dillon xl650 in a couple of months too so i will be able to reload, which makes up for the extra ammo cost of .308
You can find one??? 😯 I’m guessing this will be the new type of rifles they will outlaw next, last store I went to said there were in high demand and going for nothing less than $2000 in California!
My buddy got a brand new one and two HP Browning 9mm handguns for $1100 in gold through a guy with an ffl about a year ago, he still hasn’t put any rounds through it. My first question was, does he have any more?????
thanks for the info i have learned in the past few days that you really want on of the newer models because they are made on a cnc and a lot more accurate. also the mini 30 is another possibility because it shoots the 7.63 x 39. but i was talking to my friend and he has been on a waiting list to get on because of the obama mania about guns, they say it is going to take months to get one because they are sold out. i just don’t know what is good in this price range and ak’s are not an option, i think they are crap. but i know why they are popular
so please give me sugestions in this price range
Accuracy really depends on the model. Older Minis had a crappy rear sight that had to be removed to mount a clunky scope mount on. Accuracy with the scope was horrible with that. I always shot that one better with the peep sights.
A newer ranch rifle my brother has with the integral rings shoots quite well, its an MOA mini.
They now make a target model, dunno much about it.

I’ve had two mini 14’s and will never have another. On a good day, 3-4 inch groups @ 50yds, pie plate are larger at 100yds. I now have a bushmaster M4 and it will do 1/2 inch @ 50 and 1 to 1-1/2″ @ 100.
My Daughter’s first deer at the tender age of 9 was takin’ with a mini 14 ranch edition in stainless. It is a fun gun ( loud as hell tho..lol) and it is not very selective on ammo as it shoots most anything I have put in it. Fair accuracy at 100yds with open sights..A friend of mine uses one for hog hunting with a 30rnd clip and has alot of big hogs under his belt with it.
My favorite thing about it is the durability, mine is beat all to hell. They are built to take abuse and will fire every time in the worst possible conditions.

we hold a mini-14 shooting contest every year.
Off hand, 100 yards,iron sights, not easy !!!!!
mini-14’s are designed for abuse, loose tolerances.
extremely fun to shoot, although ammo isn’t a cheap as it used to be, but then again, I think all ammo has gotten that way.
Check out this article, the newer mini is supposed to be much better.

target masters in milpitas had them both
i was at the gunshow in san jose last weekend, there was a newer m1a for 1800 bucks, the wood on it looked like crap but the metal was in pristine shape…..what made me wonder was there was some AR15 with deteachable magazine, that they claim is CA legal….they where full size big guns, but still…..came with a note that some judge had said ok for those specific models, but might not be ok if tried by another judge or something like that
