Q:

mold for casting .251 bulllets?

Are there any non custom molds made for casting bullets that can be sized to .251? I’m looking for something flat nose from 40-70 grain.

Lee,

Most of the barrels I have slugged, had a .251 choke, but the other 23 inches was .255. That is why you don’t get stellar accuracy.

When I first started this cast bullet quest, I was told to get a .251 mold, it was a flop.

A pellet does not work very well, but if you pull a 22 lr bullet, smash it down in a vice or just hammer it until it is over .258 diameter so that it shaves lead when you tap it in the breech, then drive it in your barrel halfway from the breech end, then turn the barrel around and drive it back out the breech, that will give you your groove diameter.

I just sent Randy at RLAirguns a bag of 257420 bullets sized to .258 so he can have a reamer made to cut a lead for the 257420 in his TJ barrels he is making up for condors.

For those who are not on Doug’s lengthy waiting line, Randy’s TJ barrel and his extreme valve coupled with a heavy spring and hammer should get you between 950 and 1000 FPS with the 257420.

Knowing Randy as I do, I am sure he will have a complete cast bullet package out there in a few months.

Can I slug the barrel with a diablo pellet and what is the best procedure? I’ve had good luck with a .251 round nose bullet but I want a larger meplat bullet.

Lee,

Until you cut off that choke you will not have much luck with cast bullets.

At least I never did in the two air gun barrels I cast for.

Then you have to try and get a mold that is the correct diameter, which will be closer to .255.

So on a .251 your pissing your money away into the wind.

Far better, cheaper and faster to get a TJ barrel cut for your needs and use a off the shelf 257420 mold, if it is too long or too heavy then mill of the uneeded gas check shank like Knifemaker and Tedd have done.

Sorry to be so blunt, but I spun my wheels and bought a lot of molds to try and make a air gun barrel work.

Roachcreek, I’m casting for a Talon P, with a Marauder .25 barrel shooting 80 ftlbs.

bebtm, looks like some nice bullets you cast. I wish you lived in the USA. How much did you have to cut jack.the barrel to remove the choke? Mine is still choked.

For starters I would like to greet you all, this is my first post on the TAG, living in a excommunist country in eastern Europe. From 2 years watching this forum and I’m a big fan of long range shooting and I found many interesting information here.

Hy Lee,
Performance needs to long range shooting inpins to produce molds for the production of bullets knowing that ballistic coefficient is better than the pellets.
I have a GM barrel from my .25 cal Benjamin Marauder that I cut the chooke and made mold for FP bullets weighing 56 grains .252 caliber:

Soon unchooked barrel a review

Now try to make another mold but this time for 70 grains bullets. For starters I made blunt cutting tool, here is the picture for the comparison with 56 grain bullet:

All the best,

Lee,

Two options.

One is not a swc but the traditional 50 grain RN 25 acp. The RBCS mold does cast at 251 or 252. I had one.

The next option is the Ranchdog design molds for the 25 ACP. These were made in 6 cavity Lee mold, they were in the 255 to 258 size, but you can size them down, I have owned two of them. Last one I bought and sold on Ebay.

What are you casting for?
