Q:

Mutant Standard Arrived

Thanks again to those of you that helped answer my post the other week about bullpups. Thanks to Charlie Frear for getting the gun shipped so quickly. It arrived at work early yesterday and it was very difficult keeping my hands off of it all day. I only had a few minutes to play last night due to previous commitments, but I was very impressed when I opened up the case.

First impressions, heavier than I thought, shoulders great, and the sound is intoxicating, quiet but you know it is shooting with authority. Like I have read many times on these pages, the metal looked great, the stock, meh… But it felt really good so I am not going to worry about aesthetics.

The gun came already sighted in with an Aeon scope, but I had to move it around some this afternoon before I got comfortable. I shot a few clips outside in the cold and wind, and it is clear I need to spend a little time getting familiar with the gun.

I did some quick chrony testing once the kidlette went to bed and came up with the following for two magazines:

The numbers were spot on with the test targets received for the 18.1 JSB’s. Based on the targets the gun looks like it will shoot the 15.9 and 18.1 JSB’s equally well. I ordered a couple tins of the 15.9s to try out. Also, it appears the HST is out about 1.5mm

So with my limited time today I am very happy with my decision. Each mini shooting session I get more familiar with the gun and feel a bit more comfortable. I am hoping the weather does warm up a little this week so I can spend more time stretching its legs. Looking forward to what lies ahead…

Thanks.

Bruce

The shorties are quieter than the standard, that is the reason to buy one over the standard.

Is there a difference between barrel clamping hardware, and or dimensions in the shorty? Can a S-200 tube with enlarged tp be mounted?

an S200 tube???

I take it you mean Barrel…. yes all the mutant take a 15mm barrel.. But it would need machining on both ends… shorty is 10″ barrel

“Tube” isn’t the best word for barrel to use on a airgun forum 😳

When i was testing Full length Barrels…. I would shoot the 18″ out of the shorty at 920’s with the factory shroud screwed on the end. It was very quiet. hands down quieter than my eddie .22

I think its because it is a full length LDC and not a Shroud. So it starts at the muzzle……

Lead i think that most all the dealers have em after the shorty barrel Crisis came up they haven’t been selling too hot i would imagine. check with Tony..

I checked R&L today… Didn’t seem to have a option for the standard….. I’ll check TT out!

The Taipan Long and Short are great guns. If the barrel is ok in a short it’s a Grand Prize and the standards are awesome as well.

Where can one buy a standard at the moment?

Nice shooting! Good rifle too.

Finally had a chance to stretch it out some over the weekend. I have been using a bipod down the basement working on technique, but the weather was decent enough Sunday to get some rounds in outside. The temps were low 40’s but the sun was out and the winds were relatively calm. Here are a few five shot groups with the 18.1’s right at the 40 yard mark. The dot is 1/4″ for reference purposes.

I have to say that I am very happy with the Mutant. I also feel much better about the Aeon scope, especially for the price. Hoping for a few more good days to get out and play, and start reducing the squirrel population.

Thanks.

Bruce

The Aeon is a 6-24. The jury is still out. I need to get outside and try it out some more before I am completely sold.

Thanks.
