My Barnes Yukon .62 is getting close!
I am getting seriously excited about my next airgun! A lot of you guys know that I like Barnes’ airguns and have a few of them. Those of you that know that also know that Gary is booked deep and most of the guns are running late due to a number of reasons, mine are no different. I have two paid for and not yet delivered but the first of those is getting really close.
The nice thing about getting a gun from Gary is that while it will be a long time coming, the gun he delivers will be better than what you ordered. You don’t order a Barnes and wait to go shooting, you order a Barnes to have something special. I ordered a Yukon .58 a long time ago and paid for it over time. Since the order, Gary developed a .62 barrel and a new valve design that is killer. I shot the first .62 rifled barrel gun and the new slug and I couldn’t miss at 100 yards. Gary said it would be neat to make the Yukon in .62 and put the new valve in…who am I to argue?!!
Anyhow, my turn in the ledger has come up and I told Gary to make the gun anyway he wanted, my only requirements from the original spec sheet were stainless res and the GS layout. I’ve had plenty of time to decide on the scope for this gun and I decided on two distinct set-ups. I bought a NightForce 5.5×22 for the long range bench shooting I enjoy and a EOTECH holographic sight for shooting inside 150 yards. The optics alone cost more than most of the rest of my collection and I can’t justify any of it rationally but there you have it…
Hopefully, I will soon be able to post reviews on the gun with both optics set-ups.

What are the numbers so far?

We got to the range late in the day so we only had time for a short session. We’ll have to see about slugs sized to plus or minus a couple thousandths and what some tuning will bring.
It is remarkable how smooth everything operates on this gun from the start. The bolt feels like driving a Mercedes if that makes any sense… The cocking mechanism has bearings that prevent spring bind and makes the action smooth as silk. The trigger is a two stage design where the first stage has an audible click and the second stage lets off light and crisp. The freaking recoil is a bitch though!
I was going to put the EOTECH site on for the field testing but I need a 1/2″ riser to get it to fit and naturally, that’s the only thing I don’t have in the bag of gun crap I carry around… So, we put one of Gary’s shop scopes on the gun and I learned that eye relief is important… I’ve got a little cut but no bruise to remember the gun by until I shoot it again.
Gary says the gun needs a bit more spring to make it more efficient and that will boost the power some as well. Jeez, more power?

I’m really looking forward to trying this sight. I think it will be great for hunting as far as the gun can be used. For precise target shooting or picking off small game at long range I’ll use the scope as even a 1 moa dot is too big at 200 yards to really “aim small.” I don’t go hunting a lot, but this is going to be a pretty heavy gun to start with, not having to carry a couple pounds of glass will be nice.
I’ve never seen that two dot version before. I was just thinking that it would be neat to have some sort of ballistic reticle option. Let us know how that reticle shoots!
I have ordered the XPS2-2 version. That’s the newer shorter version that has a 65 moa circle and 2 one moa dots. Those guys do have a bunch of versions! It took me a good bit of time to figure out what was what! The XPS3-2 would be just likle mine but night vision compatible, the XPS2-1 version would only have the center dot and circle…..

Tofazfou, no numbers yet. In the pictures the gun is holding air for the first time. The trigger group has not been installed as of yesterdy.
Butcher, I bought that EOTECH based a good bit on your recommendation on another thread… I’ll blame you if it doesn’t improve my shooting! It does steady the gun right?
I am confident you are going to be very happy with it!! Did you get the 65moa circle, with the 1moa dot version? I can’t keep up with all the versions they offer.
This sighting system completely removes head position from the equation. Eye relief, too. This can only have a positive affect on steadying the rifle. Can’t do that with open sights, or a scope.
Think of it this way: once zero’d (by anyone), you can shoulder the gun with your eyes closed, make it as comfortable as it could possibly be…….holding your head/neck in it’s most relaxed position. Open your eyes, and that dot will be on target no matter what.
Hand it to your friend that uses a completely opposite holding technique/head position/check weld than yourself, and the gun will still hit to point of aim. Press the stock against your ear if you want to (with a smallbore, not the .62 hehehe)….if you can see the dot, that is where the slug is going to go.
The sight is truly “idiot proof” when it comes to holding technique/position….you can get away with a lot of slop. So don’t let the Eotech affect your regular shooting form with your scoped rifles or it might make them harder to shoot! Actually, the scoped guns are probably going to seem harder to shoot in comparison anyway.
Matt Napper (owner operator Shiloh Ranch) used an Eotech on his .40caliber ranch rifle….he makes fast off-hand shots sitting on his Rhino ATV all the time while going about his business on the ranch.

The Eotech is an awesome sighting system. My friend likes to use on on his 909, and my 50 yard groups are just as tight with the Eotech as they are when using a 4X. For bigbore airgun hunting, it doesn’t get much better than an Eotech.
That mans work is ART….no other description is needed …..the engraving and attention to detail is enough to make me envious of your new toy…keep us posted Jerry 😯

It’s just amazing how much work ole GB puts into his guns. THat guy is a true artist with wood and metal and he amazes me every time i see one of his guns and how much stuff he does by hand..
