My Condor 308 build continues

My RL 308 build continues with the new valve from DyotaT100 and trying to find the best combination of spring, tophat and hammer weight.

I coated it with KG GunKote and have been trying to get it up to power with a 8 pound hammer spring, but it just wasn’t happening.

Doug sent me a couple of hammer springs to mimic his setup minus 2 inches of barrel length and different tank. His setup was 13 pound hammer spring and 101 gram hammer making 239 fpe with a 118grain bullet at 3300 psi.

My first test with a a 8 pound spring couldn’t break 500fps with the heavy valve spring.

Here’s what the 13 pound spring is doing for me with a stock condor tank at 3000psi.

Looks like I’ll move up to 100 grams for the next test and see what change that makes before increasing my top hat spacing.

With practice I might be able to use the .308 hammer beyond 75 yards, but I think it’s best to use it inside that for now. I just have to get use to holding the gun and keeping it steady when cranking the power wheel up. A good tripod may definitely be in order.

I have no problems with my Quackenbush .458 and using the big brother to this bullet. At 50 yards if my first two shots are not hole in hole then they are touching with the third shot a little lower.

400 grain .458 and 158 grain .308

It’s a 1 in 16 twist. What bullet are you thinking about?

I will agree that this bullet is not the most accurate, but what you are seeing is me pulling as I shoot.

I’ve turned the power wheel down to pw4 and as low as pw2 with the groups getting tighter because there is less jolt from the hammer but the power is down to 220fpe to 200fpe.

I want as much power as I can get against larger game so I’m giving up some accuracy for power. With it’s wide flat nose it will be one devastating hunting round. I don’t think there is anything that will transfer the energy as well. (edit- unless I HP the 311466 mold and make a flat nose pin like I have done with the 311419)

I have Seth’s BHD spitzer that is extremely accurate and around the same weight. If I was shooting beyond 100 yards then I would use it.

For smaller game I have
Lyman 311419 GC – It’s a HP mold dropping 77 grain and 88 grain solids. This mold came without the HP pin so I made a new one and one for a flat nose.

What can I say, I like gas checks.

What twist is that barrel. I have a bullet that could probly tighten up that group.

Here’s the 158 grain hammer at 50 yards on a windy day. These groups could be tighter if it was locked down, but that’s not how I will be using it. I’m still learning to hold the gun and trying to overcome the heavy hammer.

With a 26″ barrel it’s making between 240fpe to 220fpe.

After hunting season is over I want to play with the top hat spacing from .085 and get it closer to .090 in hopes of being able to keep my power while lowering the hammer weight.

I think you missed the next shot string. The one with the 730 was from cranking it up to pw 11 to see what would happen.
It’s shooting really good at 3000-2000 now over 9 shots from 920-820fps on pw 6.
On pw0 it seems to be shifting it down 20fps. Both seem to be pretty efficient if you consider 111psi per shot is being used.

Now, we gotta get rid of that 1st shot 703 fps shot cause it just waste air. So either a slightly less fill pressure like 3200 or either a heavier hammer or heavier mainspring should do the trick. One of Dougs 9.4 lbs spring would probably do it.

I think I have a winner that’s pretty darn efficient and still powerful!

I hit 930, but it took a little more pressure and cranking the power wheel to 11.

Yep, heavier hammer (95-96 grams) and your top hat further out like 90-.100″ might do the trick.

I believe I said stock tank because he was using 3300 psi and a 4500 tank.

I only had a 8 pound spring and it wasn’t enough with the .088 tophat.

Even with the 13 pound spring the .088 tophat setting was not enough. I’ve made a smaller spacer and now have a .093 setting.

Test show that 100gram hammer and .088 tophat didn’t make any more power than the 91 gram hammer and maybe the lighter hammer is moving faster. I still believe my air is thicker and is why I’m having to tinker a little more.

With a 86 gram hammer at .093 tophat I had some increase in power so my next shooting session will be with a 92 gram hammer and it should be what I’m looking for.

I’m confused. Why did you not use Doug’s valve with the 13 pound spring? You said the 8 pound spring could not get you up to speed, than you said you used the 13 pound spring on “a stock condor valve”???? Thanks.
