My First Airforce
Hi Guys
A few months back my arch-nemesis, a Labrador-sized raccoon sat at my bait station, comfortably eating without a care in the world. I frantically pumped my custom 1322. By pump 15 he had become startled and ran off. This wasn’t the first or second time it happened. Finally had enough. Decided it was time to switch to PCP.
Purchased a Marauder Pistol. It was neat. Rotary magazine was neat. Easy to pump, also neat. It didn’t like most pellets, very not-neat. In the end I could only shoot JSB Exact Heavy’s. Not that big a deal, I can deal with only buying one pellet type. Already in that habit from my springers.
Then I got a chrony. Found that the p-rod was only producing 500-550FPS. What a terrible disappointment. Steps were taken to tune, mod the hammer spring and all resulted in disaster.
AirForce guns have always caught my eye. I got drunk and ordered one. That’s how I do things: Contemplate for months then make a rash alcohol-induced decision. I’ve ended up with a comfortable house, 2 great kids and a wife I intend to keep around using that exact method. Has not steered me wrong.
The Talon SS is on it’s way from PA. She’ll be here tomorrow. From the videos and forums I’ve found that it will be a bit louder than a stock p-rod. I’ve purchased a Talon Tunes 6″ Shroud extension in anticipation.
MY QUESTION
What do I mod next?
I’ve found hammer slap mods, “top hat” mods (I dont know what that is), and tank drop-downs. What should I know as a new Talon owner? I plan on pumping. HPA tank may be in my future but for now I would like to continue to use my Benjamin HPA pump. It’s sometimes time-consuming but by no means difficult.

selection and power wheel choices . If you went with a .177 cal . then the 6″ LDC should work okay , but if you went with a .22 or .25
caliber than you would have been better off with Tonys’ 9 inch LDC . I know because I have a Talon SS in .22 cal. and up-graded it to a
.25 caliper and I have the 9 inch LDC on it and it really made it backyard friendly . Anyways welcome to TAG and to the world of higher
PCP air guns . :5: :8: :5: :8:

Hi Birdman
“Settling down” isn’t in my wheelhouse but I’ll do my best to provide some clarification. I chose .22 because A) I have an abundance of it available B) Price Point C) The trajectory is perfect for my use (under 40 yards) D) It’s a good medium between target and small game. The vast majority of my other airguns are 22. Will I switch to 25 down the line? Perhaps. We’ll see how the Talon pans out
I chose the 6″ LDC because form factor is a concern for me. I prefer carbines and bullpups. A 9″ LDC pushes the total length to almost 40″. That’s just a tad to big for my liking. I do alot of urban shooting so sound is a concern. Then again, I’m a half hour from Detroit, there’s plenty of others involved in urban shooting as well. How does the 6″ do in dampening the report compared to 9″? Talk to me in terms of Crosman so I can better understand. I previous shot p-rod with a TKO LDC and a variety of 13xx/22xx’s with 5-6.5″ TKO’s. If a TalonSS with 6″ TT shroud is comparable to a p-rod with TKO LDC, it should be just fine. I shoot medium power springers in the yard, to an extent, with no complaints
The ideal situation would be to shoot at a lower setting for plinking and targets. When the ding-donger goes off, crank it up a few and dispatch whatever vermin has crossed my path. I live in the city a couple blocks from a golf course and a muni park. We get all manner of coon, possum, mole, groundhog and deer (I know better than to take the deer) that wonder down into our yard. Some of the raccoon are pretty big, comparable to a 2nd grader with early onset diabetes. My primary targets would be coon, possum and fox squirrels
The plan is to hand pump the talon. Considering SCBA/SCUBA HPA tanks. There’s a fill site in town but it’s a bit out of the way. Haven’t had any problems pumping the Benjamin to 3k so far. I’m in good shape and pretty handsome. Sometimes I take my shirt off to pump because it makes me feel good about myself.
